Job overview

Aim  To assist the technicians with the smooth running of the Science Department.   

Accountability  The Lab Assistant will report to the Head of Chemistry. However, on a day-to-day basis, the lab assistant will work under the direction of the Science department technicians.  

TECHNICIAN DUTIES   

Delivering equipment and materials to labs.  

Clearing away after practical classes, washing glassware, loading and unloading dishwasher.  Unpacking, documenting, checking and storing deliveries.

Labelling of equipment.  

General laboratory housekeeping and organisation eg. Washing of goggles/safety specs, putting equipment out for PAT testing, cleaning greenhouse, assisting with inventories, and filing.   

Weekly/Half Termly and Termly H+S checks  

Photocopying of lesson/practical notes.   

Updating of paperwork, requiring general ICT skills e.g. Word and Excel.  

Local shopping for practical class supplies e.g. Hearts from butchers, fruit and vegetables etc.  

Providing some back-up cover in the unlikely event of lab technician absence.  

Preparing chemical solutions for class practicals.  

Providing general assistance to Lab Technicians as and when required.
