We are looking for a Lab Technician to play a key role in the college's science department. The role reports to the Head of Science and starts in September 2023. During the academic year, the role will require 25-30 hours (negotiable) working per week.


About The Role 

As a Lab technician you will: 

  • Undertake risk assessments for Science activities in all courses
  • Prepare solutions and equipment for practical experiments and assist in setting up classrooms where feasible
  • Take inventory of apparatus in the department and assist in the maintenance and repair of scientific instruments and apparatus
  • Take inventory of chemicals, ensuring their safe storage and suitable stock levels
  • Liaise with members of staff regarding equipment and safety issues
  • Trial experiments and demonstrations for practical experiments
  • Maintain relevant health and safety records with respect to chemicals and equipment in the science department
  • Assist with the overall work of the science department.


About You 

You have: 

  • Relevant experience in a laboratory role
  • Good working knowledge of good lab practices preferably in an educational environment
  • Excellent personal manner
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Able to communicate effectively and clearly in writing and orally
  • Sound scientific background to enable assistance in all three scientific disciplines; biology, chemistry and physics
  • Pleasant and cheerful personality
  • Well-organised and efficient
  • A team player who is flexible and adaptable to day-to-day circumstances
  • Calm and sensitive approach
  • Smart, professional appearance

Mander Portman Woodward is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form situated in Cambridge. It is an independent school that forms part of the Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) group of schools, which also has schools in London and Birmingham. A smaller than average-sized secondary school, it will provide 240 places for secondary and sixth form students between the ages of 14-20, when fully subscribed.

The MPW organisation was established in 1973 as the “route to the UK’s top universities” for students. The Cambridge branch of MPW schools opened in 1987, occupying two linked Victorian houses and another nearby house.
