PE Department Overview

The Royal School PE department is extremely busy and hardworking. It comprises three PE specialists, along with visiting teachers and other support staff who have their own specialisms. You will be joining a successful and dynamic PE department and will work as part of a team who are relentless in their drive to be excellent in all aspects of their work.  Our pupils are hardworking and our staff are dedicated and committed to our young people. It is vital that all our staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate about their specialism. 

Role Overview 

We seek a candidate with significant expertise in Lacrosse and to work with a department who are highly committed and confident. They will be expected to teach Lacrosse to girls aged 11 – 18 yrs and coach, support and manage both our Junior and Senior teams. Candidates must indicate their level of Lacrosse coaching and umpiring experience in their application. It is also important for them to be able to assist with a wide range of other sports including cricket, dance, gymnastics, netball and health-related exercise.

It is essential to be able to attend afternoon games lessons, alongside fixtures during the week and at weekends. The ability to drive a school minibus, for team practices and matches etc., would be a distinct advantage. The successful candidate would help coordinate fixtures as part of their administrative duties.

Working hours are as follows:

Tuesday  & Thursday 1-5.30pm: Lunch club, P6-8 Lesson,  afterschool club/fixtures 4.5hrs

Saturday: Fixtures 9-1pm ( approx. 4hrs)

Person Specification & Job Description 

  • A degree in Sport Science or a related subject would be desirable
  • Good knowledge of lacrosse (L2 and above or teaching experience)
  • Honest and trustworthy
  • Caring towards pupils and staff
  • Well organised
  • Flexible in approach
  • Enthusiasm and ability to motivate and inspire pupils
  • To work effectively as a member of the PE department team 
  • To teach and coach across all ages and abilities 
  • Confidence to contribute to sport in the Junior School department (Y3 – Y6) may also be an advantage.
  • To set high expectations for all pupils, to deepen their knowledge and understanding and to maximise their achievement 
  • Good ICT skills
  • Good communication skills with pupils, parents and staff 
  • Hold a full clean driving licence (ideally with category D1 entitlement)
  • Must be prepared to attend internal and external training days 
  • To keep abreast of relevant curricular and educational developments particularly in PE 
  • To work with the Learning Support staff 
  • Assessing and monitoring of pupil progress including setting and marking prep regularly for academic PE classes, (in accordance with the School’s prep policy), to consolidate and extend learning and to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Communicate student progress with parents via written reports or other means.
  • Any other duties as reasonable required by your Head of Department or member of the Senior Management Team.
