Job overview

We're looking for up to two Lead Examiners to join our experienced senior team for our AS Music specification (7271/P - Performance or 7271/C - Composition). Successful applicants will be responsible for leading and supporting a team of examiners to accurately mark our AS papers. These roles are separate from our Lead Assessment Writers, who are responsible for producing the question paper before the exam.

These are great roles for education professionals with expert knowledge of music assessment who are looking for a personal development opportunity. The roles can be worked alongside other professional commitments and are primarily home based, with between five and ten days of meetings taking place annually in Guildford, London or Manchester between May and September.

What we are looking for

We're looking for current or recent teachers or departmental heads with passion for, and expertise in, music. Your academic background should include a degree in music or other relevant subject.

Candidates for these positions should have examining experience with a recognised awarding body, and some leadership experience. You'll be highly organised, and should enjoy getting the best out of people and helping individuals deliver to tight deadlines. Strong communication skills (written and oral) are also important in these roles.

The roles require strong IT skills, as much of the associated work is computer based, with an increasing use of online applications/e-technologies. The ideal candidate will also have some experience of electronic marking.
Training for the roles will be provided and further support will be given.

Key tasks

Some of the key tasks associated with these positions include:

  • Leading meetings (online or face-to-face) to communicate and embed a common and consistent application of the mark scheme
  • Producing training and guidance to convey the marking standard
  • Monitoring examiners’ standards of marking to ensure consistent and accurate application
  • Taking any actions required to help ensure that all marking is completed by the specified deadlines
  • Reviewing evidence at the Awarding Committee and providing professional judgement based on this evidence to determine the grade boundaries
  • Undertaking post-results review of marking and supporting AQA with further post-results work as required.
