Job overview

To stand on the shoulders of giants

The East London Science School is an oversubscribed school now in its fifth year. The school is seeking an exceptional Lead in Mathematics to work with the leadership team to develop this unique and exciting school as we prepare to open our sixth form from September 2018.

Under the direction of the principal, you will lead and manage the maths department, taking responsibility for all areas of curriculum, teaching and assessment as well as outcomes in mathematics, and to help to realise the vision and ambitions for the school.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly committed, passionate mathematics teacher to further develop and deliver our unique knowledge-led curriculum aimed at giving students in one of the most deprived areas of the country access to a stimulating and enriching academic education.

Mathematics is central to the success of the school and we are looking for a talented individual who has a belief in the ability of all students to succeed at mathematics. All our A-level candidates will be asked to study mathematics A-level. We are looking for an excellent classroom teacher who can demand the highest standards of behaviour and academic discipline from all our pupils. As a school, curriculum development and reform is central to our success. We emphasise teaching the subject first and foremost and resist demands to teach to the test. We need a curriculum leader capable of inspiring the department to take the pupils on a journey from basic mathematical ability through to flourishing as young mathematicians.

As our Lead in Mathematics, you will contribute to the development of our unique enrichment curriculum, including working with outside speakers and organising visits across London.

Most importantly, you will be responsible for guiding our first cohort through A-level mathematics. This post is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and successful teacher with ample opportunity to develop your career as the school grows.

ELSS offers a full programme of CPD support for all our staff based on the school's educational principles and the professional experience of our staff.

If you have any questions prior to applying or would like further information, please email careers@eastlondonscienceschool.co.uk

Click the 'apply now' button where you can complete our application form.

Closing date: Friday 20th April 2018.

Interview date: Friday 27th April 2018.

ELSS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers. All successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS disclosure.

Are you ready to change the world? Harris Science Academy East London is a new, small school with big ambitions. We are in the top 3% of schools nationally for year on year improvement and in the top 20 most improved schools in London. Join us on our mission to help our children become leaders in their chosen field with many leading in science and to become one of the top schools in the UK.

This is no ordinary school. Situated in an eclectic array of buildings next to the renowned Three Mills Studios (location of BBC’s Masterchef) amongst the iconic East London canal network, this is a unique setting to provide a life changing education for the children of East London.

We believe we will succeed in this mission through a relentless focus on the basic functions of a high performing school:

  1. Unified leadership and alignment behind a powerful mission.
  2. Exemplary student behaviour.
  3. A well-taught, unapologetically academic education for all children.
  4. Regular opportunities for character development.

Every member of our school community is a leader. We believe that leadership does not have to be macho or at the expense of others. Our values of GRACE help us to achieve success in a collegiate and sustainable way:

  • Growth – the belief that we can always improve and that feedback from others is essential for our development.
  • Responsibility – we own our decisions and recognise when we need to put things right or make a change.
  • Ambition – the belief that access to the top grades, the best universities and elite careers are available for our children.
  • Compassion – we are kind to others and grateful for what we have.
  • Excellence – we prioritise doing the basics well day after day, so we build habits that lead to success.

The school joined the Harris Federation in September 2022. The Harris Federation is the most successful large multi-academy trust in the UK and the only large trust where disadvantaged students secured a positive progress score in 2022. We are hugely proud of the work we do to support the most vulnerable children in the UK. The Federation has made a significant financial investment in the Academy, with upgrades to Sixth Form provision, buildings and IT. The Federation subject consultants provide industry leading support to middle leaders to deliver the best education possible for all children across the Federation.

If you are aligned, driven and committed to doing what works, this is an excellent opportunity to join an organisation undergoing rapid transformation.
