The King’s CE School is seeking a highly motivated Lead Teacher for SEND to manage the day to day operational matters of SEND in the school.  To teach children with a range of special educational needs either individually or in small groups. Predominantly such lessons will be English, literacy and specific learning difficulties, with the aim of developing a child’s independent learning within mainstream classes across the curriculum.    The purpose of this post is to organise, develop and implement the support and inclusion of pupils with SEND.  To lead a team of Teaching Assistants.  Working with the SENCO to develop and implement the School’s strategy for Special Needs so that it integrates with the major objectives of the school development plan, and the School’s SEND Policy.

Qualifications Knowledge and Experience 

Qualified Teacher Status  

A record of successful teaching of SEND pupils in another school 

A clear philosophy of how successful learning is promoted and why the subject should be taught 

Awareness of the strategies available for improving the learning and achievement of pupils of all abilities 

Knowledge of national requirements  

Know the current legal requirements, national policies and guidance on the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being of children and young people   

Personal Qualities  

A reflective practitioner with a positive attitude towards continuing professional development and their own learning 

Ambition for further future promotion 

Committed to the role of the form tutor and to the academic and social progress of the pupils in the tutor group  

Good personal organisation and time management  

A commitment to equality of opportunity for all pupils  

Ability to work effectively under pressure    

Skills and Abilities  

Good teaching skills that enable learners of all abilities to make at least the progress expected with the ability to motivate students of all levels and make learning enjoyable  

The ability to personalise learning so that pupils with special needs and other identified groups make at least the progress expected  

Good classroom and behaviour management skills with high expectations of pupil learning and behaviour  

The ability to assess pupil progress and use this assessment to promote further learning  

Good communication skills both verbally and in writing  

Good inter personal skills that promote good relationships with pupils, parents, colleagues and outside agencies  

A confident user of IT, with the ability to use it to enhance pupil learning in the classroom

In the mid-1990s, Regis School was on the point of closure, having dropped from its former position as Wolverhampton’s premier comprehensive. There were around 500 students on roll, and the school had lost the support of the local community. A bold and innovative solution was adopted, which saw The King’s School opening in September 1998 and Regis School ceasing to exist. However, the premises, pupils and staff remained unchanged, but crucially a new head had been appointed to take charge of a new Church of England VA school. In addition to commitments of support from the Local Authority and the Lichfield Diocese, the school joined with S Peter’s C of E (VA) School as the two partner members of the Lichfield Foundation in order to provide opportunities for mutual support and collaboration.

The early stages were a struggle, especially given the lack of funds, but designation as a Specialist Visual Arts college and then as a Fresh Start school brought real opportunities to refurbish and enhance the buildings. At the same time, the efforts of the Head and the staff, together with very strong support from governors, started to pay off, as community support for the school re-emerged. This included not only the local residents, but also support from a variety of Faith Groups within Wolverhampton. This latter support has been particularly important since the school’s admissions policy is deliberately intended to make King’s School an inclusive school where pupils of all faiths, and no faith, are respected and valued and in recognition as ‘Outstanding’ by the Church of England inspection in 2007 – perhaps quite remarkable when the multi-ethnic and multi-faith nature of the school is taken into account.

 

The school is in Tettenhall which is a very attractive village on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. We are a couple of miles away from the Shropshire and Staffordshire countryside and colleagues come to us from all directions. Our students come from all over the city. There are currently around 800 of them on roll.
