Job overview

NOR: 909

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and committed Lead Teacher of Science to join a friendly and supportive department which has developed into a highly regarded team, under strong leadership, in line with the rapid improvement of the school.  Applications are welcome from experienced practitioners, able to teach throughout the age and ability range, with the relevant skills to add leadership capacity by taking on a key role within Science.

The principal responsibilities of the Lead Teacher of Science will be to coordinate student interventions, to develop the quality of teaching and learning across the department and to undertake whole-school leadership of STEM.  Additional roles will be negotiated following appointment.  This opportunity would suit any teacher with excellent interpersonal skills, a commitment to raising standards and the ability to form positive relationships with young people.

These are exciting times at Alec Hunter, since our most recent Ofsted inspection, in July 2017, graded the school as ‘good’ for the first time in its history, with the report noting that “School leaders have established a culture where expectations of pupils and teachers are high and improvement is rapid”.

Alec Hunter Academy is a mixed, 11-16 comprehensive school with an established reputation as a welcoming and forward-thinking learning community.  In addition, we are full partners in the Braintree Sixth Form, which provides opportunities for some of our staff to teach at Key Stage 5.  The school works in close partnership with Saffron Walden County High School, one of the highest performing schools in Essex, and other schools within the Saffron Academy Trust.  Numerous opportunities for professional development exist through this partnership and our membership of several local networks.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment.  A Disclosure and Barring Service check at enhanced level will be required for this post.  If you would like to visit the school prior to making an application, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange this.

About Alec Hunter Academy

Alec Hunter Academy is a mixed, oversubscribed 11-16 comprehensive school with an established reputation as a welcoming and forward-thinking learning community. As a member of the Saffron Academy Trust, we work in close partnership with a small family of schools in north-west Essex, including Saffron Walden County High, one of the highest performing schools in the county. Numerous opportunities for professional development exist through this partnership and our membership of several local networks.

At Alec Hunter Academy, we pride ourselves on the positive relationships we engender between our young people and the adults who work with them on a day-to-day basis. We believe that students learn best when they feel valued and when the expectations of them are high.

We anticipate that our learners will attend school with a positive attitude to learning, that they will embrace challenge where they encounter it and will be enthusiastic, resourceful, adaptable and resilient.

Our partnership with Saffron Walden County High School, one of the highest performing schools in Essex, through the sponsorship of the Saffron Academy Trust, has injected fresh impetus into the school and will undoubtedly have a significant impact as the links develop.

We hope that our young people will leave Alec Hunter with happy memories, having enjoyed a range of experiences that have prepared them for the next phase of their education and for their adult lives.
