Job overview

We are excited to announce we are looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic and forward thinking Learning Leader of Science for September 2017.

We are excited to announce we are looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic and forward thinking Learning Leader of Science for September 2017.

The College is a very warm and friendly school with a fantastic student body and dedicated and talented staff. You will join us at an exciting time as we continue our journey to become an outstanding academy.

We are passionate about caring for our students, ensuring that they are all known as individuals. Ofsted June 2016 stated that “everyone in the school puts pupils’ well-being at the centre of everything they do”.

We have high expectations of our pupils. Ofsted June 2016 stated “pupils know the high standards of behaviour expected of them” and “as a result, they behave well in lessons”.

Our vision for the school is to deliver outstanding education to our students, not only in terms of academic success, but by ensuring we develop the “whole child”. In order to enjoy a successful adult life it is important that our students develop characteristics such as leadership, organisation, resilience, initiative, and communication.

As Learning Leader of the Science Department you will lead a department with a rich history of success. In June 2016 Ofsted rightly recognised Science as our highest performing team, stating “The science team has created an exciting and inspirational curriculum, and progress in science has been consistently strong. Pupils enjoy science lessons and therefore many choose to continue with science in the sixth form.” Results are outstanding with value added and progress 8 ranking us as one of the top schools in the county year on year. Regularly 80% of GCSE candidates gain at least two grade C’s or above. Triple Science results are always significantly above the national average for all three disciplines. However, we won’t stop there, we are committed to continual improvement and enhancing the outcomes for our students.

We are looking to appoint the best Leader. Given the size and strength of the team, we are able to accommodate a candidate specialising in any of the Science disciplines.

If you are an experienced and effective Science Teacher looking for a new challenge, this is an excellent opportunity. We will commit to improving your pedagogy and your leadership skills and you will enjoy working in a school where the students are hugely positive and keen to learn. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced second in Science looking for their next promoted post or for an outstanding Science Teacher with a proven track record and thirst for innovation looking to join us at this exciting time in the College’s development.

We recognise that to realise our vision we need to attract, develop and reward our people. We are an ‘Investor in People’, and are committed to the professional development and career progression of our employees.

The successful candidate will:

· Improve as a teacher through our tailored professional development programme (we run weekly training sessions that all staff have access to in addition to bespoke individual development)

· Have opportunities for promotion (in a relatively small College new opportunities for leadership and personal development frequently arise)

· Be supported by a performance management system that rewards excellence

· Have access to national ground-breaking Science CPD

The essential qualities for the Learning Leader of Science include:

· A qualified and effective classroom practitioner with an experience of teaching KS3 & KS4

· A commitment to, and a passion for, the teaching of Science and leading the Science Department

· A commitment to developing their own pedagogy and that of others

· A commitment to meeting all the requirements for safeguarding children

· Effective organisation and communication skills

· A commitment to inclusion

We are incredibly proud of our school, a medium sized Secondary Academy (11-18), located in Irthlingborough, East Northamptonshire. As a fully inclusive school our students are a vibrant and varied mix that bring an energy that is not found in many other schools. The loyalty the students show for the staff and community, whom they recognise care so deeply about them, is what makes Huxlow a very rewarding and fun place to work. If you want to work with a team committed to making a difference to the lives of the young people in our community, we want to hear from you!

I believe that every student and staff member that walks through the doors of Huxlow is a valuable member of our community, and we work hard to ensure they are welcomed, supported and challenged to be the best version of themselves that they can be.

We are entering an exciting new phase in the history of Huxlow and are placing a pursuit of excellence at the core of everything we do. I hope that you feel inspired to aim high and come and join us as we strive to make Huxlow even better.

Academic success is hugely important to us as we recognise its power to open doors for young people. We have a rich history of students of all abilities, and from a wide variety of backgrounds, meeting and exceeding their potential.

In 2019, Year 11 students achieved some of the best GCSE results in the school’s history. 53% of students gained 5 GCSE’s including English and Maths at Grade 4 and above. Recent CAGs and TAGs have returned record progress data for the school for KS4 and KS5. We were delighted by these excellent results, which reflect the high level of dedication of both our students and staff. As the new Headteacher, I am committed to improving the school even further for our students.

We place an emphasis on respect for each other and working together to ensure that our community is constantly developing. Huxlow students are exceptional, staff go the extra mile, and we are dedicated to Professional Learning and Development.

Please explore our website, the recent Headteacher’s letters section and our social media, to gain a flavour of what it means to be part of the Huxlow Academy community. We hope you are as impressed by our school as we are. I look forward to receiving your application should you decide you want to be a part of the Huxlow team.

Please contact the school if you have any questions or require any further information.
