This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced educator to join the learning team at Aerospace Bristol, a brand new museum opening in the summer of 2017.
Aerospace Bristol tells the incredible story of over 100 years of aerospace design and manufacturing from the perspective of those who were part of it. The museum has STEM learning at its heart and aims to inspire, entertain and inform present and future generations through their understanding of, and engagement with, the stories and collections of Bristol’s aerospace industry – past, present and future. It is the home of the last Concorde ever built and the last to fly when it returned to its birthplace in Filton.
Main Duties
- Deliver activities, learning sessions and outreach as part of a programme of educational group visits, outreach, tertiary research and life-long learning opportunities and events
- Work with other members of the team to create and develop educational resources and activities for target groups identified in the Activity Plan
- Promote learning programmes and projects to target groups paying particular attention to non-user groups
- Prepare learning spaces and equipment for activity sessions
- Assist in the management of the content of the learning section of the museum’s website and contribute content for newsletters
- Liaise with schools, colleges, teachers and lecturers to promote the museum, and answer enquiries relating to the museum learning offer - make contacts and actively develop teacher relationships and promote the collections, activities and web resources to schools
- Contribute data to the contacts database for effective communication with learning users
- Assist teachers/school groups in planning, coordinating, and managing visits
- Assist in the development and delivery of outreach projects for specific harder to reach audiences and to develop interest in museum
- Assist in ensuring the day-to-day co-ordination and best use of learning spaces and equipment
- Assist in funding applications for learning projects
- Act on evaluation of learning activities, events and programmers as part of the wider HLF project
- Work with the staff of other heritage / STEM organisations to develop a range of collaborative educational programmers that will interest and benefit visitors and the local community
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of best practice in museum education, STEM education and learning, in order to provide the best possible service
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
The successful candidate will have a passion for learning and experience working in education and the STEM or heritage sectors. The capability to work as a part of a team is essential as is being people focused and outcome orientated.
Essential skills:
- Relevant degree, appropriate to the role (e.g. education, science, engineering or heritage). Equivalent professional experience within the sector will also be considered
- Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering high quality hands-on learning activities
- Prior experience of working with children and communicating to a wide range of audiences
- Passion for and demonstrable understanding of STEM subjects
- Good written and verbal communication skills including public speaking
- Excellent team working and organisational skills
- Excellent IT, social media, facilitation and presentation skills – including working with Microsoft office, databases and educational hardware e.g. interactive whiteboard.
- Ability to fulfil the travel requirements of the role
Desirable skills:
- Professional Teaching Qualification
- Experience of working with volunteers
- Experience of working across different age ranges
- A good understanding of the current national curriculum and the latest innovations in teaching practice
- Previous experience working in or teaching Physics, DT or Engineering
- Innovation, creativity and problem solving – able to rise to a challenge by providing innovative and practical solutions
- Good customer service experience in a customer focused organisation
- Knowledge of relevant legislative requirements relating to the role
The post holder will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
Some weekend, evening and Bank Holiday working will be required.
