Learning Specialist

The Learning Specialist is responsible for supporting students in the School’s Specific Learning Differences (SLD) programme. The goal of the programme is to provide instruction in learning strategies and build independence in students with diagnosed learning differences. 

The successful candidate will also manage the PSHE curriculum and act as one of the school's designated safeguarding leaders (DSL).

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and share the School Special Needs Register containing Cognitive and learning support, Emotional Support, Gifted and Talented student support and Medical and dietary needs.
• Meet regularly with teaching teams and provide general academic support for students across primary and secondary.
• In collaboration with parents, teachers and students, develop and share an Annual Individualised Education Plan (AIEP)/ PAP explaining specific academic goals and objectives for the academic year; update PAP in light of new findings and arrange and attend PAP meetings. 
• Teach specific learning strategies using mainstream curriculum material, individualised for a particular learning profile.
• Conduct informal assessments and help each student understand and articulate his/her learning style and needs and show sensitivity to learning differences and promote learning diversity in a positive way
• Communicate regularly with parents about progress .
• Help to identify external  support services such as counselling, tutoring, speech and language therapy where necessary.
• Share information regarding casework with the pastoral  team.
• Participate in meetings as required, including committees and sub-committees.
• Present information and provide training and education about SLD issues and the SLD program to faculty and parents.
• Assume responsibility for professional development; keep abreast of current research and attend professional workshops and training.
• Support  continuity of the students’ educational experience to allow smooth transition from/to further education system.
• Manage the peer tutoring system within the school
• Manage and promote the Diversity Committee within the school
• Manage and promote the PSHE curriculum.

Education & Experience Required

• Bilingual in English and French (native-level English needed);
• Postgraduate training that includes the study of Specific Learning Differences, child/adolescent psychology and/or special education;
•  Substantive experience as a Learning Specialist in a similar school setting working with students aged 4-18  with mild to moderate Specific Learning Differences;
• A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children;
•  Experience with differentiating instruction to meet the learning needs of all students.  Experience and commitment to collaborative working in a team-focused environment;  
• An ability to provide strategy support in all levels of English, French and Maths and Science;
•  Outstanding collaborative skills and a desire to work in a team-focused environment;
•  Commitment to and facility with integration of technology in the service of student learning;
•  Willingness to contribute to school life and activities in additional ways through coaching, advising and special projects;
•  Ability to support and nurture the school-home partnership;
• High level of IT competency.
  Desirable qualifications/experience: 
• Teaching experience in an international environment;
•  Knowledge and understanding of international and/or independent school communities.
