The Role:

We are seeking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant (Medical) to provide learning activities for students with complex medical needs under the direction and supervision of a qualified teacher. Working with individuals or small groups of children in collaboration with teaching staff. 


This post is 32.5 hours per week, 39 weeks per year – Term time (38 weeks) plus 1 week non-pupil days.



Some of your responsibilities will include:

• Proactively supporting students with activities designed to enhance numeracy and literacy 

• Supporting SEN students in gaining the ability to utilise IT in the classroom 

• Promoting positive behaviour, raising esteem and encouraging an aspirational culture 

• Working with SEN students to foster their development as independent learners 

• Further duties to be tailored to need, relating to applicant skill-set and direction of Headteacher

• Demonstrate a commitment to keeping children and young people safe

• Report any disclosure made to the appropriate person

• Report any safeguarding concerns in the workplace to the appropriate person

• Maintain an awareness of the Trust policies in relation to safeguarding

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the medical needs of students with an Educational Health Care Plan and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support students’ learning.
  • Deliver learning activities adjusting activities according to student responses/needs.
  • To provide medical support to EHCP students, administering injections and other medical interventions where necessary such as use of enteral feeding device and BiPAP equipment to support breathing. There may also be a need to provide personal care at times. 
  • Aid students to learn as effectively as possible and to reach their full potential in whole class, group or individual situations.
  • Using questioning to ensure students have understood instructions as to what they have to do, what they will learn and what outcome is expected of them by the end of the lesson. 
  • Ensuring students are able to use equipment and materials provided. 
  • Motivating and encouraging students. 


Supporting the Learning Support Team 

• Participate in evaluation of the support programme. 

• Administration of student reviews.

• Ensuring needs of new students are circulated to relevant staff.

• Any other duties assigned by the SENDCo.


Supporting the School 

• Contribute to reviews of the students’ progress.

• To attend relevant in-service training.

• To be aware of school procedures. 


General

• To participate in the performance and development review process, taking personal responsibility for identification of learning, development and training opportunities in discussion with line manager.

• To comply with individual responsibilities, in accordance with the role, for health & safety in the workplace.

• Ensure all duties and services provided are in accordance with the trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.



We're looking for you if you:

• Successful recent experience working with children in a learning environment.

• Medical experience (previous nursing experience useful or perhaps supporting students with complex medical needs including diabetes).

• Basic knowledge of First Aid.

• Ability to work positively with parents, the school nurse and other professionals to improve support for students. 

• Excellent reading and writing skills equivalent to at least NVQ Level 2.

• Excellent numeracy skills equivalent to at least NVQ Level 2.

• Ability to understand and support children with developmental difficulty or disability.

Paxman Academy is a newly built, co-educational, fully comprehensive 11-16 academy, which opened its doors in September 2019. In its first two years of opening, the Academy has been a popular choice and is heavily oversubscribed.
