Job overview

The role of Librarian at Bobby Moore Academy provides a unique and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated applicant with a keen interest in children’s literature and experience in managing a library, ideally within an educational setting.

The Librarian will be responsible for the development, management and promotion of the school library which is in its fourth year of development. The post provides an opportunity for the ideal applicant to shape the library over the next few years, as we become an all through school from early years to KS5. The Librarian will continue to develop the Primary offer from KS1 into KS2 and expand the Secondary offer into the Sixth form.

The Librarian will play a pivotal role in the promotion of reading for pleasure, expanding links between the core curriculum and literature, improving students’ reading and developing students’ leadership skills.

About the Role

Inspire a love of learning and reading throughout the school

Ensure the delivery and on-going development of high-quality provision in the Library and be well-informed about newly published, age-appropriate literature for children and developments in literacy

Develop a “one-school” library with the Primary site with the development of Reading Buddies and other appropriate links between both sites

Manage manual and electronic record and information systems for students

Support the Director of English with the full implementation of the DRET Reads programme

Coordinate termly reading age testing alongside the Director of English and the Literacy Coordinator

Work alongside the Literacy Coordinator and Director of English to promote reading for pleasure in all key stages and monitor and improve borrowing amongst reluctant readers; and co-ordinate a Literary Festival in celebration of World Book Day

Support the Literacy Coordinator with the launch of Accelerated Reader for years 7 and 8, monitoring student participation and working alongside the Literacy Coordinator to maximise engagement

Coordinate a schedule of tutor time library-based sessions for each tutor group, working alongside the Literacy Coordinator to ensure all tutor groups are given the opportunity to visit the library at least three times per year

Develop the current library collection through acquisition of new and replacement material, including digital content; classification and cataloguing new and donated items; stock taking and editing

Maintain a current knowledge of literature for young people, designing and implementing programmes and activities to inspire independent and wider reading

Build cross curricular links with other subjects

Assist pupils in their choice of reading and staff with resources to help learning and teaching

Promote activities and events to enhance learning, encourage reading and the use of the Library for research and study by pupils and staff

Maintain an appropriate and attractive environment: regular displays, clear shelf guiding, advice on the use of catalogues, orderly shelving, tidiness and a quiet atmosphere

Recruit, train and monitor pupil librarians

Maintain links with relevant professional bodies

Run library competitions, holiday reading schemes and other activities to promote a love of reading

Write the Library entries for the school publications as required

Advise on the development of the library for catering for our KS2 and KS5 cohorts in the upcoming years

Manage the Library budget and make appropriate budgetary submissions to the Principal

Apply the school’s Behaviour for Learning Policy appropriately

NJC15-19 (Inner) : FTE £28,005-£30,078, pro rata £24,488.67-£26,301.39

About You

Level 3 Qualification or equivalent

A strong background in managing a library within an educational setting

A teaching background is desirable

High level of literacy, attention to detail and ability to use initiative

High order administrative and management skills, including planning, prioritising, enquiry handling and problem-solving abilities

Be flexible and responsive to a changing educational environment

Contribute to whole school initiatives

The ability to promote the Library in a busy academic school

The ability to manage and disseminate information in a range of different media

A knowledge of the current education framework

Good, proven communication skills with both adults and children

Reader development initiatives

Strategic planning skills

Behaviour management skills

Learning support skills

Committed to working co-operatively with young people; able to communicate sensitively, imaginatively and effectively with them
