Job overview

Sir William Perkins’s School is a high-performing independent girl’s school for approximately 611 students aged 11 – 18 years. The Head is both a member of HMC and GSA. It was founded in 1725 and is now on an attractive 12 acre site situated on the outskirts of Chertsey, a two minute walk from the railway station and very near to the junction of the M3 and M25.

The School has excellent facilities, having benefited from an extensive and ongoing building and refurbishment programme including a new Sixth Form Centre and purpose built Boat Club which opened in summer 2016.

We are looking for an individual whose enthusiasm and love of reading will motivate our young people to have a thirst for knowledge and develop a life-long love of learning.  Our librarian will possess excellent administrative and interpersonal skills in order to work with students in all year groups and staff in a wide range of roles.

The library is in a prime position within the school and is utilised for co-curricular and after-school activities. We are looking for the successful candidate to continue to build this profile and provide exciting opportunities for visiting authors and external speakers to use the space to inspire our students.

The librarian will need to engage with all of our academic departments to ensure that resources and materials are available to students and staff. These will range from resources which directly support the curriculum to those which enable independent exploration of subjects and ideas. The library is attached to the English department; this will enable the candidate to maintain and develop this already productive relationship.

Demonstrable experience of working and communicating with teenagers and young people will provide you with a strong foundation for this role. A background in or working knowledge of a library (or similar environment) would also be advantageous but a love of reading and learning will be essential.  There is a requirement to complete administration duties in this role so a sound knowledge of all MS Office packages is required.  Experience of digital databases or library cataloging system would also be an advantage.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL:

Entrance to the School is by competitive examination and the School values its excellent academic reputation. The students are highly motivated and eager to learn. Significant emphasis is also placed on the broad and balanced curriculum, the wide-ranging co-curricular activities and the caring and supportive environment.

The ISI regulatory compliance inspection in September 2016 recorded that all eight parts of the standard were met and our report in the Good Schools Guide 2016 describes our “Excellent Results achieved with a big dollop of humour, humanity and freedom of thought”.

Visits to the school are warmly welcomed and encouraged.

About Sir William Perkins's School

Welcome to Sir William Perkins's School

Where Generosity, Curiosity and Ambition thrive and Great Things are expected

At Sir William Perkins’s School, students are at our heart. We expect the best from them and in return they can expect the best from us – both in terms of teaching of the highest quality, and in receiving the tailored support and attention they need to achieve.

We know our students, their talents, hopes and aspirations; and in turn we seek staff who actively encourage our students to explore their interests and achieve their potential in an innovative and inspiring atmosphere.

Founded in 1725, we are a warm and friendly independent girls’ school for 600 students aged 11-18. Set in 13 acres of attractive green-belt grounds in Surrey, SWPS is a beautiful environment with first-rate facilities, in which both staff and students flourish.

Easily reached by road or public transport, we are a two-minute walk from Chertsey Train Station, with direct links to London Waterloo and surrounding towns.

The power of potential

We challenge each student to explore their potential through academic aspiration and active participation. We teach our students to expect Great Things of themselves, because we know every individual is capable of Great Things.

Academic success is always our priority, but education should be about far more than achieving top grades. We believe in educating the whole person and equipping our students with the confidence to make their mark on the world.

We encourage students to become involved in the many co-curricular activities on offer. Taking every opportunity to develop their interests and creativity, their interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills, to be forward-thinking and to reach into the wider community.

A SWPS student is:

  • Generous with their thoughts, their gifts and their time.
  • Curious about their world and their future.
  • Ambitious for themselves and for others.
