UWCSEA has a vacancy for August 2019 at its East Campus for a Literacy Coach.

The Literacy Coach supports teachers, leaders and students in developing an effective pedagogy and implementing the college curriculum.  In classrooms and elsewhere across the school, curriculum coaches support the teaching and learning process.  Coaches provide leadership, training and professional development to teachers and are required to teach, collaborate, coach or consult as appropriate

Person specification 

  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • Minimum of five years’ Primary school teaching experience (4-11 year-olds)
  • Teacher leadership and/or coaching experience
  • Experience training and/or supporting teachers’ professional development
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics;  Activities;  Outdoor Education; Personal and  Social Education and Service
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners
  • Experience with curriculum planning
  • The following would be an advantage:
    - Knowledge and experience of international curricula, their delivery and assessment
    - Experience/understanding with Reading and Writing workshop frameworks
    - Knowledge of and experience with Reggio Emilia inspired approaches
    - Experience with a child centred, play based approach
    - Experience teaching students who are English Language Learners

Main Responsibilities

To improve students’ learning by

  • Support teachers in their development of literacy pedagogy in ways that reflect the UWCSEA Learning Principles and UWCSEA Profile, and work collaboratively with them to meet their professional learning goals.
  • Work with Heads of Grade, mentors and VPs to ensure that the Reading and Writing workshop approaches are used to support learning in an age appropriate manner throughout the Primary School.
  • Support teams with implementation of our K-5 concept based, Literacy curriculum, including assisting with unit design, curriculum mapping and assessment of intended learning.
  • Collaborate with a team of K-12 coaches, the curriculum development team, library and Learning Support and the Director of Teaching and Learning.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to a professional learning community consisting of other coaches, the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Primary Leadership Team.
  • Promote vertical and horizontal articulation and coherence of student learning.
  • Collaboratively develop units of instruction for Literacy that align to the standards and benchmarks.
  • Experience teaching across the K-5 age range would be advantageous as the successful candidate will have a small teaching load.
  • Using data as a tool for discussion and decision making with teams
  • Provide in house professional learning opportunities for teams, parents, teaching assistants  and individuals, based around the strategic plan of the Primary School
  • Plan and support coaching cycles with teams and individuals
  • Develop and maintain a professional learning library
  • Plan for and work with external consultants as required
  • Facilitate meetings with teams, literacy mentors and individuals
  • Consider the vertical and horizontal articulation of the UWCSEA curriculum, with special attention to leading the Primary Literacy curriculum
  • Build trusting relationships and maintain confidentiality
  • Use coaching conversations as a method for facilitating the thinking of others
