Job overview

Let’s be honest, in October 2016 our school was graded ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted and placed into special measures… We know where we stand and have high aspirations and a rigorous plan to turn the school around to a grading of ‘good’ within two years… With a positive monitoring inspection in May 2017 and our best results in 3 years - Get on board and make a real difference to our children and to your career.

Overview and career development recruitment incentives:

  • We are seeking to appoint an outstanding English teacher and leader who will support our ‘Head of English’ in leading and developing our English Curriculum. You will join us as our Literacy Leader.
  • This is the perfect role for candidates who want to gain middle leadership experience and secure a ‘Head of Department’ or ‘Assistant Principal’ role in the next 2 – 3 years.
  • Access and support to follow middle leadership programmes from the outset e.g. NPQML, NPQSL, Teaching Leaders.
  • Teachers in the early stages of their career are welcome to apply. If you are good enough you will be appointed. We want to employ top quality staff with leadership aspirations.
  • We advise you to come in and speak with the Principal to discuss the above and shape the next stage of your career.

We have started the new academic year strongly following our best set of results in three years. We have increased our Basics measure of English & Maths GCSE grade 4+ with a Progress 8 score of -0.06 that’s real school improvement. We have seen a significant increase in the number of students staying with us into sixth form.

After a period of instability at the Academy we are pleased to say that our journey of improvement is well underway.  We have been joined by some outstanding teachers who will help us ensure that our Year 11 and sixth form students achieve even better results in 2018. We are committed to providing a well-rounded curriculum, inspiring and effective teaching, supportive structures and a positive environment for our learners.

We welcome visits to the Academy, to see the school in action and discuss the post. To book an appointment please contact Leigh Sheehan (HR Officer) at lsheehan@shlacademy.org  or call 01908 624722.

Sir Herbert Leon Academy is an 11-19 Mixed Comprehensive in Bletchley, South Milton Keynes. Our academy has 587 learners and employs around 100 dedicated teachers and support staff. The academy's senior leadership team places high priority on colleagues' mental health and work/life balance and has established systems to allow staff to flourish. There is a centralised behaviour system, a clear line management structure and opportunities for personal and professional development. As Sir Herbert Leon is a relatively small secondary school, new staff can foster strong relationships with both colleagues and students very swiftly, which enables them to embed within their new team quickly and know how best to teach students, according to their individual needs. The students are the beating heart of the school; it is a privilege to teach them as we continue on our journey to raise aspirations and outcomes for the local community.

At Sir Herbert Leon Academy we are totally committed to each and every student’s academic success, personal well-being and preparation for the future. We are proud to be an inclusive community school which welcomes all cultures, faiths and beliefs. Our core purpose is to enable all young people to have the opportunities to make exceptional progress both academically and in their life outside of the classroom so that they are able to live fulfilling and successful lives.

Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes has excellent rail connections to the rest of the UK.  Trains run from Milton Keynes Central to London Euston every 5-15 minutes, with the fastest journeys taking just 34 minutes.  There is a brand new dual carriageway linking Milton Keynes to the M1.

There are good commuter links to London, Cambridge, Oxford and the Midlands.

Ofsted

We are currently disappointingly judged to be 'Inadequate' following our full inspection in May 2022. To view all our Ofsted reports please click here.

In the short period of time since the report has been published, the school and new Principal have moved to ensure that swift action has and is being taken to address the concerns raised in the report.
