Responsible to: Clerk of Works

Contract Type: Full time, permanent

Salary: Competitive, in line with skills and experience

Sedbergh School is seeking two enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy Estates Department as full time Maintenance and General Assistants.

It is expected that the Maintenance and General Assistants will have some knowledge of buildings and how they are constructed, as well as a knowledge of the common defects associated with buildings. Our ideal candidates will also have some knowledge or experience of plant and equipment, although this is desirable and not an essential requirement. The successful candidates must, however, be able to demonstrate that they have some experience in the area of building maintenance.

In exchange the School will offer:

  • Contributory Pension Scheme – to include life cover while remaining within the scheme;
  • Statutory Sick Pay entitlement - conditional on meeting the demands of the scheme
  • Free car parking;
  • Ride2Work;
  • Opportunity to see School productions;
  • Staff events and family fun days!
  • Use of the School’s vast facilities (outside School timetabling) including the indoor swimming pool, tennis & squash courts, and the incredible state of the art Hirst Centre, which opened in 2018.

Please note that one of the positions will be based at our Prep School in Casterton, while the other will be based at our Senior School in Sedbergh. Please make clear in your application which site you are interested in working at, if you have a preference.

Why Sedbergh?

The magnificent location of Sedbergh and the equally picturesque site of our Prep School at Casterton, just 10 miles away, offers staff an enviable opportunity to work in the spectacular scenery of the Howgills and Yorkshire Dales. If you live outside the area, then you should consider the benefits of relocating here.

Outdoors enthusiasts have a wide range of walking, fishing, sailing, climbing, caving and other outdoor pursuits all within easy reach.

For those with a desire to get away occasionally, the M6 motorway and the West Coast railway are both a short distance away for travel North or South, while other routes make West Yorkshire and the North East easy to reach.

Working for Sedbergh School means working within the School community as part of a close-knit Estates Team. Sedbergh school is committed to the development of its people and there are opportunities to develop your career and qualifications further.

About Sedbergh School

The magnificent location of Sedbergh means pupils can enjoy school life in a safe, healthy and dynamic environment. The opportunities for outdoor activities are almost unlimited - from a walk in the hills to mountain biking, or the calm of fishing to the challenge of caving. While academic study is central for every pupil the experiences of a Sedberghian are not confined to the classroom .

 Sedbergh is a School where pupils are presented  with a huge range of opportunity. It is a School which expects its pupils to seize the opportunity or, better, create the opportunity. It is our firm belief that it is much better to try something and fail rather than avoiding something because of the fear of failing. This culture ultimately breeds a positive attitude and greatly increases the likelihood of success.
