Job overview

We seek to appoint a full-time Teacher of Mandarin to start in early January 2023. The appointee will be able to teach Mandarin across the secondary age range, but the majority of them teaching will fall in the upper range, most particularly at GCSE and A Level.

In the first instance, the appointment is a fixed term one which runs to the end of the academic year 2022-23, although circumstances may allow for an extension of these terms at a later date. All pupils in the Senior School have an opportunity to study Mandarin and it is a popular subject at GCSE level. Although uptake at A Level is smaller, those who take the subject excel and the subject’s record in public examinations is very strong.

Ibstock Place was one of the first schools in the UK to teach Mandarin and many of its alumni have gone on to study in related fields at university. The person The School has also enjoyed success in Chinese public speaking competitions and other activities in which Mandarin speaking is prominent.

The successful applicant will be a confident and dynamic classroom practitioner. The department of Mandarin is small and she or he will enjoy considerable freedom to shape our pupils’ experience of the subject.

Our pupils are bright and well-motivated and the learning environment is a stimulating one for student and staff alike. Mandarin is taught within the wider Faculty of Modern Languages in which French, Spanish and German are also taught. The Faculty enjoys high-quality accommodation in New School, as well as access to sector-leading resources. An extensive programme of trips and visits supplements curricular provision and the Faculty maintains a strong culture of professional development for all of its members.
