Job overview

Appointment of the Master/Mistress in College

Winchester College seeks a Master or Mistress in College, from September 2022, to succeed Mr Ian Fraser, who retires from the post after ten distinguished years’ service.

The role is an historic post, dating back over 600 years. College, the school’s original 14th-century boarding house is home to 70 scholars – pupils who are admitted aged 13 having undertaken an academically demanding selection process known as Election. Alumni include many household names, from Nobel Prize winners to authors and Archbishops, and today’s scholars are expected to perform outstandingly well in public examinations, in university entrance, in mathematics and science Olympiads, and in many other ways including the arts, music, sports and community service.

This is an exciting time for Winchester College as it embarks on its recently outlined new Vision. As part of this, day pupils, both boys and girls, will arrive from September 2022, and girl boarders from September 2024.

The role

Winchester College is an international community that celebrates everyone’s individuality, talents, and potential. As such, we embrace diversity and inclusion in the workplace and we have no preconceptions as to the successful candidate.  They will possess:

  • An outstanding academic pedigree, and an inspiring classroom presence (any academic discipline will be considered).
  • The ability to relate to and guide a large number of highly intelligent adolescent boys, accompanied by a commitment to the pastoral values of the school, and the promotion of an inclusive culture.
  • Strong extra-curricular sympathies and interests.
  • Administrative skills, allied with the ability to maintain calmness and patience under pressure.
  • Warmth, humanity, consistency, and a strong sense of values.
  • The flexibility to see other points of view and to think strategically.
  • An interest in building and cultivating relationships with pupils, parents, colleagues, and the outside community.
  • The resilience and stamina needed to deal with the demands of boarding school life.

The Master or Mistress in College is supported by an Assistant Housemaster, a resident tutor, a matron, and a team of house tutors who reside close by. The “private side” accommodation is scheduled to receive extensive refurbishment for the school year 2021-22. The duties conform to those expected of all Winchester Housemasters.
