Job overview

Mathematics Teacher

Required for September 2025 Full or Part time

MPS/UPS + London Fringe Allowance

The Bishop’s Stortford High School is a popular, oversubscribed 6FE school of 1260 students, providing a single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 with a thriving mixed sixth form of close to 400 students, including 133 female students. This is a very exciting time to be joining our Outstanding school, as we relocated to a brand-new state-of-the-art school, in September 2024, on a large site less than a mile from our previous location. We have a fantastic new learning environment, supported by cutting edge technology, and huge opportunities for the future.

As a result of excellent teaching, our students consistently achieve fantastic academic outcomes at both GCSE and A-Level. Behaviour is exemplary in lessons and around the school. which means the school has a calm atmosphere and students are ready to learn. "Pupils are polite, well-mannered and kind. and are ambassadors for the school, demonstrating excellent behaviours in all that they do.” (Ofsted 2023)

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and engaging Mathematics teacher to join our fantastic school. The successful candidate will work within an ambitious, vibrant and high performing department to instill a love of Maths in all students. The appointed candidate would be expected to teach the full age and ability range, although previous A-Level teaching experience is not essential. We have a very supportive Maths department, who enjoy teaching the subject and work superbly well as a team. The vast majority of our students really enjoy learning Maths and this is partly due to the inclusive, yet aspirational nature of the department. We have a strong history of success at both GCSE and A Level. Each year, over 90% of students gain grade 4+ and around 40% gain grade 7+ at GCSE. We currently have four A-Level Maths classes and one Further Maths class in each of Years 12 and 13 and we also run Core Mathematics as one of our Year 12 enhancement options, with outcomes also reflecting students’ high ability and enthusiasm for the subject.

We value staff development, with A-Level teaching being shared across the department. This post could equally suit an early career teacher, or someone with more experience, looking to join a successful and ambitious department. The department is equipped with 8 modern, spacious classrooms, each with the latest touchscreen technology, to create an excellent teaching and learning environment.

Our vast list of extra-curricular activities and trips means students engage positively with school and represent our values with pride. Staff turnover is low, as they feel well-supported and enjoy working here, with many choosing the school for their own children. Facilities include a 600-seat main hall, huge 6-court sports hall, strength & conditioning gym and a large dining hall. Work begins next month on a large Artificial Grass Pitch suitable for both rugby and football.

The school’s motto: ‘Respice, Aspice, Prospice’ means we must look to the past, the present and the future. We are keen to promote traditional values of courtesy, respect and good discipline, though we also recognise the need to provide all our students with the tools they require to flourish and succeed, both now and in the future, and help them develop the skills and qualities that will ensure they are ready for the challenges that lie ahead.  Our focus is on delivering high quality, engaging lessons and providing students with the care and guidance that allows them to succeed.

We combine this with our extremely successful and wide-ranging enrichment programme, in which all students are encouraged to participate, as we believe that leading rich and varied lives allows them to flourish.  We build positive relationships, which means all students are provided with the support they need to really engage with, and enjoy, school life.

We encourage an open flow of communication between school and home so that parents really feel in touch with their child’s development. TBSHS is an active member of the Bishop’s Stortford Education Trust (BSET) as we feel that collaborating locally brings many mutual benefits to each school.

We are fully committed to preparing our young people to be thoughtful, capable, responsible citizens of the future. We provide a ‘Truly all-round education’ and we firmly believe this to be a great school and a special place for children to learn and grow.
