Job overview

Mathematics Teacher, with the possibility of a Second in Department role for a suitably experienced candidate

Job starts at the end of July 2016

St. Paul´s was founded in 1926 and was the first British school in São Paulo. The school is a not-for- profit foundation and is fully coeducational, with just under 1,100 pupils, aged from 3 to 18. It is a school with history and tradition, but which embraces innovation, contemporary values and technological developments.  We prepare our pupils within a bilingual and bicultural Anglo Brazilian community for a global future.  We offer a broad and balanced, rigorous curriculum where the individual pupil is at the heart of the teaching and learning.  It is our aim to discover the passion and talents of every pupil, and create the right environment to develop these.  Pupils leave us confident, assured and well prepared for an exciting life, and a multitude of opportunities.

We are a world class school, a member of HMC and the first officially UK government accredited British School Overseas in South America.  We are proud of our local, national and international reputation and we constantly strive to improve the opportunities for our pupils and staff.

The school has undertaken an almost continuous programme of building works over the past twenty years as it has gradually grown; this includes extensive refurbishment and extension of the original school building, the creation of a sixth form centre and library and in August 2014 we opened our multimillion reais underground state of the art sports centre.  We have now completed the construction of a new academic centre, music and art school, science facilities and learning resources space. More details about the school can be found at www.stpauls.br.

The school seeks a passionate, enthusiastic and talented practitioner with qualifications and experience to teach across the Senior School age range (Y7 to 13).  Mathematics is a strong and dynamic department in the school, offering IGCSE and IB, and pupils are routinely highly successful in public examinations.  Experience with IB is preferable but not essential for this role.  A full commitment to the life of the school is expected, as is a desire to pursue your own professional development, as an aspiration to help the school continue to develop and extend its reputation for excellence. Suitably experienced candidates can also apply for the Second in Department role.  Click here for more information about the department.

In addition to teaching duties, the successful candidate will a have a pastoral role and be a tutor to a group of 12 to 15 Senior School pupils. Tutoring is a significant part of a teacher’s responsibilities at St. Paul’s, both in terms of time devoted to it and its contribution towards the successful running of the school.  Participation in the clubs and societies will also be expected.

For expatriate staff the package is a two-year contract that includes return airfare, luggage allowances, visa expenses, medical insurance, pension scheme, dental treatment and accommodation. A new two-year contract can be negotiated after this period.  The maximum stay is six years.

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment.  The offer of the role would be made subject to receipt of satisfactory references, proof of relevant qualifications, identification checks and other safeguarding checks that confirm to British Schools Overseas standards.

A completed application form (click here), which includes a letter of application with the details of two referees should be addressed to the Head, Louise Simpson, to vacancies@stpauls.br by Thursday 25th February 2016.  Interviews will take place over Skype during the week commencing Monday 29th February. Shortlisted candidates will be required to send a 20 minute video of themselves teaching.

St. Paul’s was the first British School to be established in São Paulo (Brazil) and continues to offer an Anglo-Brazilian curriculum, embracing the best of both cultures. As an all-through (ages 3-18) co-educational school, offering the IGCSE and IB courses to pupils, we are affiliated to a global network of top UK Schools through our membership of HMC (Head’s Conference) and COBIS (Council of British International Schools). Almost 100 years old, we draw on our proud heritage as the first British school in Latin America to be recognised as a British School Overseas (BSO) by the UK government. Yet, we look forward with creativity and confidence.

At St. Paul’s we always strive to be our better selves. We have the courage of our convictions, essential values, freedom to imagine and create. This is achieved through our high quality British and Brazilian holistic education which drives the personal and academic development of pupils, within a framework of a caring, inclusive and united community. Our commitment to broad educational experiences opens many opportunities for pupils who go on to leading universities in the United Kingdom, America and Brazil.
