Our Maths results have improved significantly over the past two years under the leadership of our outstanding Head of Department. In 2018 67% of students achieved a 9-4 grade in Maths which was a 5% rise on the previous year and was above the National average. Progress 8 for Maths was -0.018. In Years 7 to 8 we have adopted the ARK Maths Mastery approach which is enabling us to close gaps swiftly and provide a solid foundation upon which to build for success at Key Stage 4. Our Maths team access high quality professional development through the scheme, and also, benefit from strong working partnerships with other local schools. The successful candidate will have a great opportunity to enhance the quality of teaching and learning within the department.
At The Dorcan Academy our fundamental belief is that all students are mathematicians, and as such, we aim to instil a love of mathematics and the confidence and willingness for students to achieve their full potential. The key principles which we aim to foster in our students are a deep understanding of mathematical thinking and language, with problem solving at the heart of our curriculum. As well as developing numeracy and literacy skills, students are taught resilience and a determination to succeed as they face new challenges; fostering a growth mindset enables them to be equipped for the world beyond school. We believe that through hard work and effort all students can improve in mathematics and achieve their very best.
For the past 3 years our examination results have improved in all areas, however, we still have a way to go to achieve our ambitious targets. Every member of staff receives bespoke support and development through our in-house coaching programme as well as additional professional development opportunities to promote further progress and career enhancement. We are committed to challenging, supporting and developing staff and students to ‘Aspire to Greatness’ so that we become the best that we can be. In a recent survey 98% of staff said they were proud to be a member of staff at The Dorcan Academy with 93% stating that they enjoy working here. (N.B. 5% did not answer the question!) 100% said that they support the vision of the academy.
Although we don’t boast a shiny new building, we do have excellent facilities, with a supportive, friendly school culture and ethos which is often commented upon by visitors.
