Job overview

This challenging yet rewarding opportunity has arisen for a Maths Teacher within an expanding Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Halton. The Bridge School was recently graded 'good' by Ofsted and caters for students aged 11 to 16 that come from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of needs including Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH). KS3 students are taught within nurture classes and receive intervention programmes, focussed on reintegration or transition. KS4 students attend The Bridge School as part of a wider Alternative Provision timetable receiving core subject teaching reflective of their needs, challenging them to achieve appropriate accreditation in line with their abilities, and preparing them for their next steps post 16.  The School seeks to identify and employ a highly competent Maths Teacher who has core responsibilities of ensuring all youngsters develop strong numeracy skills in line with their abilities and potential. They will support and develop the wider staff team, and Alternative Providers, so that numeracy is embedded across the curriculum. Teachers at The Bridge School are committed to making a difference to the lives of  disadvantaged and vulnerable children and supporting them to overcome the barriers they face within education.  This exciting opportunity will involve planning and delivering Maths to small groups of students across key stage 3 and 4. The ability to teach entry level ICT (or one other subject) would be beneficial. To be successful you will need to encourage pupils to engage using a flexible approach and the ability to deal with challenging behaviour whilst maintaining a calm learning environment is essential.  The successful applicant will have skills to engage and develop students, who may have struggled with numeracy, and whom have low confidence and engagement with learning. They will have the ability to identify specific strengths or barriers to learning, implementing innovative and creative strategies to remove these barriers, and invigorate participation. For students who have the competency to achieve accreditation up to GCSE level, high teacher expectations and subject knowledge are required in order to facilitate maximised outcomes. For other students, the ability to development and embed foundation skills will be fundamental to the role.  You will have skills and personality to develop strong, professional and sustainable relationships with students, being positive, calm, resilient, consistent and reliable. Your individual and group management and communication skills will be outstanding. This specific post has KS4 Tutor Group responsibilities, delivering PSHE / Citizenship and the daily development of student’s social, emotional and mental health needs. You will work closely Teaching Assistants and Key Workers in order to support individual students.  This is a fantastic opportunity to develop teaching within a small school setting, and to have a significant impact on the life outcomes of the young people in our care.  You should note that, if successful you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check or Enhanced DBS Check for Regulated Activity (formerly Criminal Records Bureau). Further information about DBS checks can be found at www.gov.uk/disclosure-barring-service-check   The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its students and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.   An equal opportunities organisation which welcomes applications from all sections of the community.  Visits to the school are welcome, as are informal discussions with the Head Teacher, Nigel Hunt or the Deputy Head Teacher, Louise Ambler.  Please return applications to Bev MacQuire at the school address
