Job overview

Hylands School. Where Teachers love Teaching.

We love teaching. Simple. We love it when students "get it". When they have that penny drop moment after struggling and thinking hard. We love class discussions, we love silent contemplation and study, we also love students working together.

At Hylands we love developing our teaching. This is why we send students home early on a Tuesday and spend two hours each week talking, collaborating and planning our teaching, and then we all leave before 5pm. We understand that great teaching is the reason why students at Hylands are great learners. Nothing trumps great pedagogy.

We wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Media and English teacher to join our lively and high-achieving team who work hard to ensure our students both enjoy and reach their full potential in the subject. The successful candidate would be required to teach KS4 and KS5 Media as well as KS3 English. The ability to teach KS4 English would be desirable but not essential.

The school offers excellent working conditions and staff receive strong support for their professional development. Committed and excellent practitioners will find Hylands School a place where career development is taken very seriously.

Our English and Media department is a collaborative, dynamic and supportive team who believes in creative and high-quality teaching that meets the needs of learners. Challenge and engagement is essential to our ethos. We follow the Eduqas syllabus for both KS4 and KS5 Media.  In English we teach a range of topics throughout KS3, including Gothic, Poetry from other Cultures and the Magazine Project. At KS4 we challenge students further with texts such as Jekyll and Hyde, Romeo and Juliet and Relationships Poetry. Our successes have then made both English Literature and Media Studies at A Level popular choices and our team one of the most successful within the school.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and their achievements both inside and outside school. The post requires enhanced DBS clearance, medical    checks and satisfactory references.

Hylands School is a mixed secondary school, with a small sixth form, for pupils aged 11-18. Located in Chelmsford, Essex, it converted to an academy in 2011 and is part of the Kemnal Academies Trust.

Hylands School’s sixth form provides students with opportunities to study a range of A-levels and BTECs, and to join a vibrant community where taking on new responsibilities contributes to social and personal development.

In 2016, Hylands School was placed in the top 100 schools for sustained improvement. Rising GCSE results in 2014 and 2015 were achieved through a culture of determination and resilience among all the staff and students. The school aims to continue this trend onwards and upwards.
