Permanent 35 hours per week - term time only (39 weeks per annum) with additional hours during the summer holiday to be confirmed at interview.  

This is an exciting opportunity to support our students in securing suitable post-16 destinations and courses, whilst also supporting our disadvantaged students within the school context to ensure they are successful at all levels.  

As Post-16 Transition Mentor you will be responsible for guiding our students through Year 11 and settling them into Year 12 and beyond. This role is exceptionally important, with a key aim to ensure that every single student is leaving St James with a plan to continue their education or take up employment or training. You will be responsible for taking a lead role in supporting effective access and transition from school by providing and coordinating the appropriate information, guidance and support required. The post holder will assume responsibility for providing staff, department members and stakeholders with leadership and communication focusing on the identified at-risk students in Years 11 and 12. In addition, the post holder is expected to develop positive working relationships and work effectively with the Exeter partnership schools and agencies.  

As Disadvantaged Student Mentor you will be responsible for supporting some of our most vulnerable students both academically and pastorally to ensure they have success at all levels of school life. You will be responsible for meeting with these students regularly, and building relationships with their parents with the aim of securing the best possible outcomes. There will also be the opportunity to take a lead on a number of initiatives within school to improve outcomes for disadvantaged students, including co-ordinating peer mentoring and Exeter University volunteering initiatives. Within this, the role will require communication with staff, parents and other agencies on a regualr basis. 

This role sits within both the pastoral and curriculum teams in school so offers various challenges and an opportunity to work with many different members of staff, both at St James and across Exeter and beyond. 

The role will be varied and the successful applicant will need to demonstrate an ability to work in a flexible and supportive manner. You must also be a responsible and trustworthy team player; confident and effective in coordinating and delivering programmes of support, and experienced at communicating with various audiences by email, telephone and face to face.
