Job overview

The American School in London is currently seeking a Middle/High School strings teacher, with responsibility for providing small group instruction and leading chamber string ensembles. The ASL performing arts department utilizes the American ensemble approach of music education, in which students develop their musical understanding through performance in ensembles. Applicants therefore should be familiar with group instruction and possess competent conducting skills. 

The School aims to provide an outstanding American Education in an international setting. Students at ASL study a curriculum that employs North American educational philosophy and teaching methods. 

Summary of Major Responsibilities: 

• Direct Middle School and High School small group string classes, coordinating and promoting performances at various school-related events and concerts 

• Prepare courses and plan curriculum with other members of the department, and liaise with other departments as appropriate 

• Direct extra-curricular musical ensembles 

• Represent the music department at community functions 

• Manage and maintain the instrument inventory in conjunction with other members of the Music department 

• Exhibit knowledge of current trends, pedagogy, research and topics of importance in the teaching of music by applying it in the classroom and sharing it with teachers on a departmental and school-wide basis 

• Monitor and evaluate students’ progress, prepare for parent conferences, grade assessments and complete report cards, etc. 

• Take responsibility for the safety and well-being of all students, while delivering an engaging and challenging syllabus 

• Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities 

• Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, as requested by the Middle School Principal 

Essential qualifications/experience: 

• A Bachelors’ degree in music or related educational field 

• A minimum of three years' full-time music teaching experience in a school setting, including substantive experience directing student choir 

• Demonstrable knowledge of theory, composition, arranging and music appreciation 

• Significant recent professional development and knowledge of best practice in music teaching 

• Excellent computer skills and integration of technology into the curriculum 

• Strong oral and written communication skills 

• Outstanding collaborative skills and a desire to work in a team-focused environment 

• Enthusiastic willingness to participate in wider school life (extracurricular activities, coaching, club sponsorship, etc.) 

• Demonstrable commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people 

Desirable qualifications 

• Knowledge of the US curriculum, educational philosophy and teaching methods 

• An advanced degree in music or related educational field 

• Knowledge and understanding of international teaching experience 

• Ability/willingness to lead after-school activities and extra-curricular ensembles
