ISR International School on the Rhine is a private, coeducational school catering for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. The school operates a non-selective admissions policy and has an enrolment of around 1000 students with more than 50 nationalities represented in the student body. 

ISR is accredited by the German authorities as an ‘Anerkannte Internationale Ergänzungsschule’ (International Supplementary School) and by the US accrediting agency Cognia (formerly known as AdvancED). ISR is an IB World School authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme, and also offers Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) IGCSE courses. The school is a certified member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and a licensee of the SABIS® Educational System.

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic Middle School Student Counsellor to join our team to start as of August 1, 2022. Applicants must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in psychology, counselling, social work, or education (post-graduate qualifications preferred). Applicants must also have an academic and practical understanding of developmental psychology and behaviour management. Experience working with adolescents in a therapeutic, community support, or educational setting is advantageous. 

We are particularly looking for Counsellors who:

• Hold a license as a psychotherapist/psychologist, or as a Child and Youth Worker

• Have teaching experience in primary or middle school

• Have experience working with special needs children or as a learning strategist

• Have training in Suicide Prevention

• Have training or certification in approaches such as play therapy or cognitive behaviour therapy for children

The Middle School Student Counsellor provides social, emotional, and learning support to children between the ages of 9 and 15. Working in collaboration with teachers, parents, and administrators the counsellor directly supports each child’s well-being and academic potential development.

Specific duties would include:

• Meeting with individuals and small groups of students to develop customized learning strategies and study skills

• Designing and delivering professional development workshops to teachers and parents

• Acting as a resource for teachers seeking advice on how to manage student behaviours and concerns

• Case conferencing with teachers to manage behaviours and to support students’ well-being

• Identifying when it is necessary to involve parents and/or teachers in the care and support of a student

• Identifying when it is necessary to refer a child to a mental health professional in the community

• Operating with a high level of discretion and uses exceptional judgement when including others in the support and management of student issues and conduct

• Forging collaborative and trusting relationship with teachers, administrator and parents

• Developing a referral network within the local community of mental health professionals

• Working with ISR Parent Network to offer practical workshops to parents

• Writing informative and practical articles and materials for parents and teachers

• Consulting the school nurse on relevant cases and issues

• Leading the Middle School Advising Program and collaborating with teachers to monitor the progress of the program on a regular basis

• Teaching Advising when necessary

• Providing periodic classroom substitution during teacher absences

About ISR International School on the Rhine

ISR International School on the Rhine is a co-educational international school located in the Rhineland region of Germany. The school provides places to around 1040 students aged 3-18, and occupies a large single campus. The curriculum at ISR has a primarily international focus, with a strong German theme. Younger students in the school’s Primary and Lower Secondary schools receive an international education, with a particular focus on English and German-language instruction; the school blends the Cambridge curriculum with selected aspects of other international curricula to ensure a holistic education. When students move into Upper Secondary, they will begin their journey toward IGCSE examinations. Older students can spend their final two years at ISR studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Teaching information

New teachers at ISR are given a two-week training programme in August, in order to familiarise themselves with the school and its network. Teachers are expected to hold an undergraduate degree in their chosen specialist teaching subjects, as well as an accredited teaching qualification such as a postgraduate diploma.
