The post

UWCSEA has a vacancy to start in January 2020 or August 2020 at its East Campus for a Middle School Instructional Coach. The Instructional Coach supports student learning by assisting teachers and leaders to develop and extend our teaching practice. Our pedagogical practices are founded on UWCSEA Learning Principles and the UWCSEA Profile  and the conceptual and inquiry-based approaches implicit in our school curriculum. This learning coach position requires leadership, coaching, consultation, collaboration, and facilitation of professional learning. The coach will be expected to have a teaching load within the Middle School. 

Main responsibilities

  • Build trusting and collaborative relationships with teachers in order to support teaching practices across all curricular areas in ways that reflect the UWCSEA Learning Principles and UWCSEA Profile.
  • Model strategies, provide leadership, coaching, and professional development to teachers.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and curricular leaders by supporting them to conceptualise and realise their professional learning goals through structures such as coaching cycles and action research groups.
  • Lead and/or attend meetings with teams to share research and developments, identify instructional objectives, and plan for teaching and learning opportunities.
  • Support teams with implementation of curriculum, including assisting with unit design, curriculum mapping and assessment of intended learning.
  • Plan and facilitate professional learning that supports Readers and Writers Workshop pedagogy in collaboration with the Head of Middle School English. 
  • Support the ongoing development of classroom libraries across curricular areas. 
  • Use data as a tool for discussion and decision making with teams.
  • Promote vertical and horizontal articulation and coherence of student learning.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary learning.
  • Support teams and individual teachers in intentionally planning and embedding culturally responsive and intercultural learning practices. 
  • In collaboration with the Middle School Leadership Team and Digital Literacy Coach, explore innovations that support student learning.
  • Plan for and work with external consultants as required.
  • Provide input and recommendations into the Middle School strategic development plan.

Person specification

  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • A strong desire and commitment to support young adolescent learning. 
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education:
  • Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning
  • Excellent intercultural communication skills, experience and pedagogical knowledge in areas outlined by the UWCSEA Learning Principles and the UWCSEA Profile.
  • Experience of developing concept-based teaching approaches, contemporary assessment practices and the application of technology to enhance learning across all five elements of our learning programme.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners
  • Ability to inspire, lead and model pedagogical practices for improved student learning.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, self-manage and to think and act in critical, creative and innovative ways to support teaching and learning across the Middle School.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.

The following would be an advantage:

  • Knowledge and experience of international curricula, their delivery and assessment
  • Experience/understanding with Readers and Writers Workshop frameworks
