Job overview

St John’s College School is seeking a professional and reliable Minibus Driver to join our dedicated team in one of the leading independent schools in Central Cambridge and contribute to a vibrant school community dedicated to excellence in education and care. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and comfort of our pupils during their journeys to school, as well as for extracurricular activities and trips.

Line Management

Reporting directly to the Facilities Manager, the School Minibus Driver will be responsible for the daily collection of pupils from several outlying villages. Working weekdays only for 34 weeks per year, the School Minibus Driver will be responsible for the safe and timely delivery of our pupils to school.

 Key Responsibilities

You will be required to collect the minibus and attendance register from the School’s site in Grange Road at 6:00am, and proceed to the pickup point(s) as designated by the Facilities Manager. There you will collect a designated group of children, ensuring that all those who should be on the bus are present and accounted for by completing the register.

After visiting all pickup points, you will then proceed to the School and ensure that the children are dropped off at the School in good time for the start of the School day. Unless in the case of emergency (e.g. vehicle breakdown or a child who is unwell), under no circumstances are you allowed to stop the minibus at any stops other than those which are on the published route or leave the pupils unattended on board.

Once the children have been dropped off at school as per the timings of the schedule set by the Facilities Manager, you will then park the minibus in the designated area, and carry out checks to ensure that there are no issues with the vehicle, recording this using the appropriate form or system as directed by the Facilities Manager.

At all times you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Health and Safety protocols.

Hours

You will work for 34 weeks of the year, during term time, plus an additional 15 hours outside of term to attend essential training and termly team meetings. Your normal working hours will be Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 9:00am (3 hours per day). The hours worked outside of term will be directed by the Facilities Manager and subject the schedule for whole-staff training at the start of each term. If you are required to attend training which exceeds the 15 hours included in your contract you will be remunerated for this.

You may be asked to work extra hours for Sports fixtures and/or trips etc; this will be paid extra as agreed with the Facilities Manager.

Beyond the requirement to attend training and meetings as described above, you will not be required to work during the school holidays, unless otherwise instructed.

Salary

The full time equivalent salary for 52 weeks, including holiday pay is £25,382 per annum. Based on working 15 hours per week for 34 weeks, an additional 15 hours outside of term time and holiday pay, this equates to 30.19% of full time and an actual Salary of £7,663 per annum.

Your Salary will be divided into 12 equal instalments and will be paid monthly by direct credit to a nominated bank account on the 28th day of each month (or the nearest prior working day), with the exception of December, when payment is made on 20th December (or the nearest prior working day).

The salary is reviewed annually and adjusted in September in line with salary awards to the School’s non-teaching staff. The next salary review will be in September 2025.

Applications

A handwritten letter of application should be sent with a fully completed application form (see ‘Application and Recruitment Process Explanatory Notes’) to Mr Tom Wood, Facilities Manager, St John's College School, 75 Grange Road, Cambridge CB3 9AB (recruitment@sjcs.co.uk).

Long-listed candidates will be invited to attend a first-round interview. References will be taken up on short-listed candidates who will be invited to return for a second-round interview, including a tour of the school and the final interview itself which will include questions relating to safeguarding children.

All reasonable interview expenses will be reimbursed by the School.

Set in the heart of Cambridge, St John’s College School has long enjoyed and deserved a national reputation for the exceptional quality of education and care it provides, which focuses on fostering the aptitudes and nurturing the growth of each child.  St John’s has been awarded national Best Prep School and national Best Prep School Head awards in the Tatler Schools Awards.  Its teaching has been rated ‘inspirational’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate and it is the first of the very few to have achieved the coveted ‘exceptional’ grade for children’s attainment. At St John’s, we believe in a childhood filled with affection, in which children know that they are known and valued, in which they learn to trust themselves and each other, in which they find and express their voice, discover the difference they can make for themselves and others, learn to think for themselves, to question, to collaborate, to be independent, to own and take charge of their learning and their lives.

A curriculum that believes in children draws from them the highest and the deepest levels of attainment. Though we are not selective in our Kindergarten, our children are on average at the 85th centile on national tests or ability before they leave.  Our exam results are outstanding and our 60 leavers gain on average around 25 scholarships to the strongest schools.  Up to one-third of our past pupils in due course gain Oxbridge places each year, more than in the most academically selective of schools: our children continue to be exceptional learners.

The School is located in leafy Grange Road, a short walk across the playing fields from the centre of town and the College, at the heart of which sits the Chapel, home to the internationally renowned College Chapel Choir.  The School site has undergone significant rebuilding or redevelopment in the last five years to ensure the facilities, layout and fabric of the buildings fully support the delivery of the School’s ethos.

The majority of children proceed at 13+ to day schools in Cambridge, each of which sets its own Entrance exams, predominantly in English and Maths. About one-third of the children proceed at 13+ to boarding schools via Common Entrance while others will proceed via Academic Scholarship examinations.
