About the role

We are seeking a Minor Capital Works Specialist to work in collaboration within a dedicated team of property professional, and who will be responsible for the planning, prioritising and supervising the maintenance, building and alterations projects across approximately 45 schools within the Sydney Catholic Schools’ (SCS) property portfolio, including residential, educational and office properties.

The function is responsible for ensuring an annual budget of approximately $80m million from planning through to project completion is in accordance with established project asset management procedure, policies, government regulations and building standards.

In this exciting role as a Minor Capital Works Specialist with strong Facilities Management experience, you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting WHS excellence across SCS
  • Direct operational management of approximately 15 schools with strategic oversight of multiple regions and the respective Facilities Officers, approximately 45 schools in total
  • maintaining relationships with Principals and staff along with other internal and external stakeholders
  • ensure that compliance is achieved by applying strategic oversight and direction across the centralised service contracts program
  • Complete risk reviews and follow up works program to ensure safety and continuous improvement is evident.
  • leading, participating in, and coordinating with other stakeholders to deliver SCS building/maintenance works programs
  • Preparation of the necessary proposals and strategy papers in accordance with SCS standards for project approvals
  • Developing specifications for the projects, including cost estimates, explanation of desired use, scope of works and risk assessments
  • Selection of contractors and suppliers who demonstrate high-quality standards, risk management, child protection, relevant experience and licensing and meet SCS standards of contractor management
  • Ensuring that all capital works building projects are delivered safely, meet SCS quality expectations, and ensure project handover is in accordance with the specifications according to any relevant DA and is compliant with applicable building codes
  • Undertake risk assessments for each project and controls are in place to manage risks.
  • Facilitation of project control groups

About you

To be successful in this position, you must possess:

  • a Degree in Building Construction, Facility Management or equivalent; or TAFE qualification with extensive 10 + years experience in building construction and maintenance or other relevant industry/local government experience in building asset management
  • Significant experience delivering industry best practice health and safety strategies
  • experience overseeing facilities teams and setting strategic goals
  • experience is conducting property and infrastructure risk reviews and developing strategies to minimise risk
  • proven experience in managing and implementing multiple projects, including control of budgeting, expenditure and resources
  • proven ability to manage a team of external project consultants and architects across project management, design and cost control disciplines.
  • proven experience in the administration of small construction contracts within an operational, educational setting, including the ability to manage project delivery, safety and stakeholder engagement issues.
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to liaise with internal and external client areas
  • excellent organisational and time management skills to ensure the facilitation of the operational requirements of the school and parish communities
  • demonstrated ability to classify the risk assessment of projects and assess contract WHS plans
  • experience in reporting and providing analytics and metrics
  • ability to work with sensitive and confidential information
  • willingness to respect, support and uphold the mission, ethos and teachings of the Catholic Church and the values of Sydney Catholic Schools.

It is also desirable for the successful candidate to have:

  • A good understanding of the Building Code of Australia (BCA).
  • Current driver’s licence.
