Rickmansworth School is an 11-18 heavily oversubscribed co-educational partially (35%) selective academy with nearly 1400 students on roll, increasing to around 1575 students over the next five years. Academic results are strong at KS4 and KS5 with the vast majority of students securing their first choice university destinations.

The School is in a very strong, stable financial position with over £4m recently spent on school expansion including a new Sixth-form centre, performing arts theatres and an Innovation & Design Centre. The School is also supported extremely well by a fantastic PTA and Foundation. Our outstanding staff well-being programme includes fortnightly well-being periods, access to our fitness suite and swimming pool, flu vaccinations and complimentary eye tests. The School’s admissions criteria gives preference to staff members’ children. Our students enjoy learning and are an absolute pleasure to teach. We believe every child deserves the best and we aim to achieve excellence in all aspects of school life.

About the Modern Foreign Language Department

The MFL department is highly regarded in the school. We have a set of rooms dedicated to language teaching which have recently been modernised and include a digital Sanako language laboratory.

As a Faculty we aim:

  • To develop the ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication
  • To offer insights into the culture and civilisation of the countries where the language is spoken
  • To encourage positive attitudes to foreign language learning and to speakers of foreign languages and tolerance and respect for other cultures
  • To develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning,
  • To form a sound base of the skills, language and attitudes required for further study and employment
  • To develop students’ understanding of themselves and their culture
  • To provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation.

Key Stage 3:

Students are taught languages in mixed ability groups.

Students study French and German in their form groups in Year 7. They have three lessons of each language per fortnight and will choose which one they want to continue with at the end of the Year. In Years 8 & 9 students have five hours of their chosen language per fortnight. We continually look for ways to develop our curriculum and are in the process of changing courses; from Expo and Echo to Dynamo and Stimmt.

Key Stage 4:

French and German (GCSE) Examination Board: AQA

Approximately 70% of the cohort follow a GCSE in a Modern Language in mixed ability groups. We follow the Studio and Stimmt courses.

Key Stage 5:

French and German (Advanced Level) - Examination Board: AQA

Extra-Curricular:

Additionally, there are activities outside of the classroom to enhance learning. We run an annual MFL Factor evening for Year 7 students aided by our language leaders from Key Stage 4. In the Summer Term we organise some outreach work with our local primary schools which builds on the links we have already established through the Language Leader Programme. We organise trips to the Christmas markets in Berlin and Amiens for Year 8 students which are hugely popular. We are developing cross-curricular trips for KS4. Work experience in the target language country is a possibility for students in KS5.

Community Languages:

There is an opportunity for students to sit a GCSE in their community language.

Deadline for applications: 08:00 Friday 21 May 2021

Interview date: WC 24 May 2021 (or sooner on receipt of application)
