Music Teacher

Required for January 2023. Edinburgh Steiner School is seeking an inspirational and GTCS registered music teacher to join our thriving School community. This is a part-time post with the potential for this to be full-time. Presently the position involves teaching 16 x 40 minute lessons over three days. Salary £17,464.39 per annum. Benefits include generous fee remission and a contributory pension scheme.                                            MUSIC TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

                                               Lower School 10 – 14 years old

 

 

1.     Teach and engage pupils with a wide range of songs which follow the seasons, festivals and general Steiner curriculum. These should increase in complexity as the age groups progress: part songs, rounds and choral music.

 

2.     Teach the pipe or recorder to Class 5.

 

3.     Introduce age-appropriate aspects of music theory.

 

4.     Encourage pupils to take up musical instruments, particularly orchestral ones. this requires liaising with the pupils’ class teachers and parents.

 

5.     Run a weekly choir for Classes 5 and 6.

 

6.     Take a weekly lower school orchestra for classes 5 and 6.

 

7.     Prepare items for performance at assemblies and concerts.

 

8.     Organise an annual weekend pupils’ concert.

 

9.     Support class and subject teachers with musical contributions for class plays or presentations.

 

10. With support from other members of staff, arrange an annual Christmas Concert at a local church.

 

11. When possible, put on a musical, for performance with volunteer pupils from several classes.

 

 

 

 

                                               Upper School 14 – 18 years old.

 

 

12.  Lead a choir for the whole of the upper school at the beginning of the school day, for three days per week.

 

13. Take the senior orchestra (classes 7 -12).

 

14. Teach SQA Higher Music to a small group of pupils for university entrance purposes. this requires a good knowledge of music history, musical styles, theory, harmony and composition. This is a course taught over two years.

 

15. Sometimes a short “main lesson” is offered in class 11. This gives an overview of the        evolution of music over the ages.

 

 

 

 

Private Pupil Instrumental Lessons

 

 

Coordinate a small group of free-lance instrumental teachers for private lessons to take place on school premises.
