The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a Government funded programme which aims to inspire and guide young people through their transition from school to college and/or employment.  Derby College has been delivering the NCS programme since 2012 and over that time we have supported 2182 young people to become NCS graduates.

We are looking for a team of enthusiastic individuals to lead or support this year’s cohort of NCS participants aged 16-17 years old through a variety of activities including residential stays and a social action project. Each programme runs for four consecutive weeks beginning on a variety of start dates between June 27th and August 1st.

Introductory phase
Pre-programme promotion and building awareness of the NCS, recruiting young people to take part, invitations to taster events, meet & greet, information evenings and communication with prospective participants to get them excited about their NCS journey.
Phase 1: Camping Residential: Adventurous activities
A five day, four night residential, Monday – Friday that includes a programme of team building and physical challenges at a campsite more than an hour from home.  Activities such as camping, climbing, bouldering, weaselling, caving, bushcraft, hiking and abseiling. Focused on personal and social development.
Phase 2: Close to home residential : Skill-building and community
A five day, four night residential in University style accommodation that includes a set of structured sessions delivered on Derby College sites, designed to help young people to understand more about their local community, social issues, project planning, fundraising, marketing, campaigning and to find out more about charities and service providers who support the community.
Phase 3: Social Action Planning & Delivery
The final two weeks of the programme during which participants work alongside their team leaders and mentors to design and deliver a social action project to address a problem or need in their local community
Phase 4: Graduation
A large scale graduation event during the week beginning 14th September at Derby College Roundhouse to celebrate achievements, receive certificates and find out about the potential to progress.

The attached documents go into more detail about the role a Team Leader takes during each phase of the programme, what we are looking for in terms of qualities and expertise, the dates on which the programme takes place and a broad outline of the training programme each member of staff needs to complete.

Applicants will be shortlisted for a selection day that will take place on a Saturday morning in in February or March; those who are selected will be invited for interview during the week beginning 4th April. Successful interviewees will be required to complete online and face-to-face training to the required standard before an offer of employment is confirmed.

We will be delivering a presentation for any prospective applicants on Tuesday 26th January at 6.30pm at The Roundhouse, Derby College, please contact alison.plant@derby-college.ac.uk  if you wish to come along.

The NCS programme is challenging but incredibly rewarding – our staff thoroughly enjoy supporting our young people and find it almost life-changing in their approach to their work and career. Applicants who pass the interview phase will be offered a position on successful completion of NCS training to the required standard. There are many elements and phases to the programme and we realise that you may want to know more in depth information before you apply for the role and to make you feel more prepared you for a potential interview.
