Job overview

BESA is a prestigious, not-for-profit school which follows the English National Curriculum and the International Primary & Middle Years Curriculum, serving the international diplomatic and business communities of Ankara as well as the local population. It is an accredited member of COBIS (Council of British International Schools) and is Turkey’s only IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) school. It was highly praised in its most recent BSO (British Schools Overseas) inspection. Children at BESA are happy and achieve high academic standards.

The school is delightfully situated in a rolling landscape of playgrounds and woodland in the heart of Turkey’s capital city. Ankara itself has all the modern shopping and entertainment facilities expected of a major world capital city and is centrally placed to explore the rest of Turkey. Within a few hours’ drive significant historical sites and natural wonders can be explored, including the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Cappadocia and Safranbolu. Winter ski resorts and summer beach resorts are also within easy reach whilst Ankara’s international airport allows the opportunity to travel further afield.

The successful applicants will:

  • Be dynamic, inspirational, fully-qualified teachers with experience of working in a British School
  • Be flexible, resourceful, positive and willing to learn
  • Have up-to-date knowledge of the English National Curriculum and, ideally, experience with the International Primary Curriculum
  • Be willing to play a full part in the life of the school, including extra-curricular activities
  • Have excellent planning, organisation and communication skills
  • Be confident in the use of Assessment for Learning practices to improve pupils’ learning
  • Be confident in the use of ICT to enhance children’s learning

About British Embassy School Ankara

The British Embassy School Ankara is a co-educational, not for profit, international school located in Ankara, capital of The Republic of Turkey. It is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, most recently in April 2022 when the school achieved an 'Excellent' rating for pupil's academic achievement and personal development.

First established in 1959, the school occupies a site on the grounds of the British embassy and currently hosts around 200 pupils aged 3-14. From September 2024 the school will open its first Year 10 cohort.

The school was founded in order to provide an education to expatriate families living in Ankara, although it does accept students from the local population as well. Although a relatively small school, it is able to boast of a wide range of different teaching and recreational facilities, including an indoor sports arena and numerous modern classrooms.

The British Embassy School Ankara follows the English National Curriculum for English and Maths, as well as the International Primary and Middle curriculums. As a result, the school offers numerous high-quality core subjects as well as some wider options. From September 2024 this will also include iGCSE provision.

The school teaches in English, and provides proper support for students speaking English as a second or third language. There is also support provided for students with additional learning needs.

The British Embassy School is an active member of IAPs, COBIS and the Black Sea Schools Group.
