Caterham Education Centre 

Part of the Aurora Group, Caterham Education Centre (CEC), in Caterham, Surrey is currently looking to recruit an Outreach & Transition Teacher. CEC is a 30-place secondary/post 16 leaning centre supporting young people aged 11 – 16 who have difficulties with communication and social interaction, typically associated with Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism, and challenging behaviour.  

CEC is linked to Aurora Redehall School they share the same Headteacher and Senior Management Team, however each site has its own Assistant Head and team of Teachers and TAs. Although the sites operate separately on the whole, students do cross between sites occasionally.

Key Duties: 

  • Ensure that pupils are properly safeguarded and understand how to make a referral to the schools Designated Safeguarding Officer
  • Deliver high quality teaching and learning to children and young people with Asperger’s Syndrome, Specific Learning Difficulties and Complex Needs, and who may present with some challenging behaviours.
  • Be responsible for the high quality of teaching and learning of all pupils who are assigned to the post holder, having responsibility for their progress, welfare and outcomes.
  • Supervise the work of any support staff who are assigned to work with the post holder’s pupils.
  • To take responsibility for implementing school policies and practice, including those relating to safeguarding and equality of opportunity.
  • Provide leadership across the school in relation to safeguarding and student transition, to include:

*monitoring quality and standards in relation to attendance and safeguarding

*contributing to school planning and self-evaluation

*providing advice to other teachers and support staff

*advising SLT and DSL in relation to any safeguarding concerns relating to individuals or specific policies/practices

*contribute to appropriate professional development in relation to transition and safeguarding.

*to implement the aims of the school.

Knowledge and experience

  • Working knowledge of students with complex needs and SEND -. understanding and experience of autism and associated co-morbid conditions and how these can affect learning
  • Evidence of sound knowledge of the national curriculum - Curriculum development and implementation for pupils with SEND
  • To have an up to date knowledge and understanding of the professional duties of teachers and the statutory framework within which teachers work
  • Strong knowledge of the most up to date safeguarding matters and guidance.
  • Experience of working in a special school environment and in particular with pupils with autism is essential
  • Experience of partnering with students and their families and/or further education providers, focusing on transitions is desirable

Due to the requirements of this role you will need to hold a full UK driving licence
