Aurora Severnside is a new school for 11-16 year olds with SEMH needs, having taken the best elements of a mainstream school and the best elements of a special school to create an environment where young people can achieve their own goals and thrive - be that with GSCEs or a vocational route. 

The main purpose of the role: 

We are looking for an Outreach Worker to support a young person in the home and in the local community. The role will involve a mixed education programme for the young person including life skills and engagement activities.  

You will manage parts of the admission and assessment procedure in relation to home visits and liaison with parents, carers and other agencies who may be working to support the potential student admission, and then report to and advise the SLT. The role will also include teaching and learning to groups and individuals as designated by the SLT. 

The programme will initially be purely outreach, building up slowly with time on site and in the school. The long term outcome is to support the young person to reintegrate back into a school placement. There will be support and training from the school, but you will be lone working when out in the community. 

The young person is located in South Bristol, therefore travel between Bristol and Berkeley will be an essential part of the role 

Key duties: 

  • Ensure that pupils are properly safeguarded and understand how to make a referral to the schools Designated Safeguarding Officer 
  • Deliver high quality teaching and learning to children and young people with Asperger’s Syndrome, Specific Learning Difficulties and Complex Needs, and who may present with some challenging behaviours.  
  • Be responsible for the high quality of teaching and learning of all pupils who are assigned to the post holder, having responsibility for their progress, welfare and outcomes. 
  • Supervise the work of any support staff who are assigned to work with the post holder’s pupils. 
  • To take responsibility for implementing school policies and practice, including those relating to safeguarding and equality of opportunity. 
  • Contribute to the delivery and development of the curriculum, having regard to the educational, physical and social needs of the students within a learning environment. 
  • Maintain and use short, medium and long-term plans in delivering the curriculum 
  • Monitor and review personalised targets that will optimise learning for students 
  • Work collaboratively with other members of staff as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Liaise effectively with parents/carers. 

Duties will vary, you must expect to diversify and lend a hand wherever is required.

Skills and Qualifications

Successful candidate qualities: 

Knowledge: 

  • Working knowledge of students with complex needs and SEND -. understanding and experience of autism and associated co-morbid conditions and how these can affect learning 
  • Evidence of sound knowledge of the national curriculum - Curriculum development and implementation for pupils with SEND 
  • To have an up to date knowledge and understanding of the professional duties of teachers and the statutory framework within which teachers work 
  • Strong knowledge of the most up to date safeguarding matters and guidance. 

Skills: 

  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Good teaching and communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Effective skills in planning, preparation, recording and reviewing students’ progress. 
  • Good IT skills and understand of how IT can be used to support learning. 
  • Ability to remain calm and reflective when working in a challenging environment. 
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative - well organised, prioritise effectively and achieve results against deadlines. 
  • Ability to engage pupils in positive enabling relationships 

Experience: 

  • Experience of working in a special school environment and in particular with pupils with autism. 
  • Postgraduate diploma in Autism (desirable) 
  • Experience of successfully delivering a differentiated curriculum to pupils with a wide range of needs. (desirable) 
  • PGCE, Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent teaching qualification (desirable)
