South Hampstead High School, the 2022 Independent Girls’ School of the Year, is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified graduate to join our strong, dynamic and exciting Classics department on a part-time basis for one year.

As Teacher of Classics, you will teach Latin and Classical Civilisation from beginners’ level to A Level and beyond. The ability to teach Classical Greek would also be an advantage. 

If you are a talented classicist and passionate about teaching the subject, we would love to hear from you. We welcome applications from qualified teachers, ECTs and those looking to begin a career in teaching.

Classics at South Hampstead High School

Classics is a popular subject, with Latin compulsory for all girls in Years 7,8 and 9 and Classical Civilisation A Level is also a popular choice for girls in the Sixth Form. Pupils regularly progress to read classical subjects at Oxford or Cambridge and other leading universities.

The department is well resourced and offers a full and exciting extra-curricular programme, including annual overseas visits to Classical sites in Italy, Greece, Turkey and France and UK visits to Hadrian’s Wall, St. Albans and Lullingstone Roman Villa.

There are currently six members of staff in the department, all of whom are extremely supportive of one another and regularly share resources and experiences.
