Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic teacher to join our highly successful History department. The post is part-time (0.6 of full-time) but the School is willing to consider those seeking a full-time, or larger part-time position, if they are able to offer other subjects.

The Post and the Department

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic teacher to join our highly successful History department. At GCSE, results have been very strong with over 60% gaining A*/A grades in 2017 and our A-Level results are also outstanding with over 73% gaining A*/A grades in 2017 as well as exceptional value-added. We are a vibrant and dynamic department frequently taking students on trips both in the UK and abroad, to destinations such as Russia, China, the US, Poland and the WW1 battlefields.

The History department at d’Overbroeck’s offers teachers and students alike a friendly and welcoming environment where classes are small (maximum 15 at GCSE and 10 at A-Level) and standards and expectations are high.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the planning, teaching and assessment within the History department, which follows the AQA History specification at both GCSE and A-Level. They will work alongside the Heads of History: Rob Pollard (years 7-11) and Becky Mann (Sixth Form) as well as three other teaching colleagues.

We embrace a flexible approach to teaching and would welcome someone with a sense of fun and a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs. All applicants will be expected to have a very good degree in History or a related subject and be able to demonstrate their teaching ability.

The school does not insist that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though many members of staff have an appropriate qualification. NQTs receive a full induction programme through ISTIP (http://istip.co.uk) with the support and guidance of senior members of staff. Graduates who have not completed a PGCE receive an extensive in-house training programme. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer support and training to NQTs and recent graduates.

Salary and hours

The school has its own salary scale (above the national scale) and pension scheme. There are additional responsibility awards for senior Sixth Form pastoral responsibilities.

The advertised post is a part-time one, but the School is always willing to consider applications from teachers who wish to work a larger part-time position should they be willing to take on teaching in a second subject.
