Job overview

Part-Time Teacher of Science (approximately 0.4)

We are looking for a well qualified and committed teacher to teach science to GCSE Level. The post is for Hilary Term and Trinity Term 2019 in the first instance, with the possibility of the post becoming permanent from September 2019. Pupils are taught each science separately; the teaching commitment for this post is predominantly Chemistry with some Physics. The successful candidate will be required to teach 18 lessons a week (nine hours).

The specifications currently followed are from the EDUQAS 9-1 Science in Y9, 10 and 11. Top set pupils take all three sciences separately at GCSE using the EDUQAS separate courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Pupils begin the GCSE course at the start of Year 9. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 follow a course preparing them for GCSE, based on national recommendations.

There are five full-time and two part-time members of the Science department, supported by a part-time technician.

The well-equipped department is housed in a purpose-built block with four laboratories and two preparation rooms, with a further laboratory detached from the main block devoted mostly to Prep School teaching. Food and Nutrition is taught within the Science department and a dedicated food room was built in 2014. We offer the Leith’s Introductory Certificate in Food and Wine in Sixth Form and GCSE Food and Nutrition. Food is taught throughout the senior school and Key Stage 2.

Sciences and Food are very popular options at A-level, and the department has among the strongest results in the school, particularly at GCSE.
