Start dates: Ongoing
Location: See Below
Contract: Part-time consultant (self-employed)
Salary: Variable

TES Institute, part of TES Global, is one of the largest providers in the country of Initial Teacher Training (ITT), Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE), and professional development and leadership training. We provide high quality but flexible approaches to learning, designed to help school staff teach and lead with confidence.

We need Pathway Tutors for our very successful Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) programme, specifically for Secondary Maths.

You must have experience of;

  • working with trainee teachers and or NQTs including making judgements against the Teachers' Standards and in providing advice and support to develop practice
  • observing teaching and learning and providing expert verbal and written feedback to develop practice
  • working professionally with school staff at all levels from headteacher to trainee teacher.

To reflect our provision, with start dates for the SKE programme available throughout the year, we are taking applications on a rolling basis. There may therefore be a delay between your application being received and confirmation of the outcome, as we continue to review applications on an ongoing basis. Work will be offered to successful applicants as and when new cohorts of learners start their programmes and can be matched to suitable tutors.

About us

TES Institute

TES Institute is a leading provider of online courses and programmes with a particular focus on teacher training and development. We have a wealth of experience in the education sector and our Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme is accredited by The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). We have recently been praised by Ofsted for the quality of our training across the partnership.

TES Institute, inspected under the new June 2014 two stage framework, received an overall grade of ‘Good’ for its work securing consistently high quality outcomes for its trainees. TES Institute is the largest provider of Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) programmes for pre-ITT trainees in England and also offers a range of online SKE to qualified teachers. These SKE programmes have won a number of accolades, including an award in the ‘best online learning programme’ category at the e-Learning awards 2013.

Our programmes

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) programmes for trainee teachers

These 100% online programmes are available to anyone with a conditional offer on a teacher training programme in (currently) Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Modern Languages, Computing, Biology and Geography (English and Primary with Maths to be launched shortly), who needs to enhance their subject knowledge before starting ITT. Funding from the NCTL is available to eligible trainees for programme lengths ranging from 8-28 weeks.

Pathway Tutors are expected to mentor trainees online (with no in-school visits) throughout their SKE programme. They will coach their subject knowledge and skill development and support their progress.

You can find out more about the programme here.

Additional details can be found here.

The Role

The Pathway Tutor role is key to the success of trainees on our programmes.

Our programmes are managed, organised and delivered through TES Institute's virtual learning environment (VLE), which is also the place where all individual trainees’ progress is logged and recorded.

The Pathway Tutor must be willing to learn and understand the VLE and engage with it fully (training is provided). The Pathway Tutor will carry out regular ‘virtual visits’ to check that trainee records and documentation in the VLE are correct and up-to-date and that trainees are showing evidence of progression.

Below are the criteria which tutors are required to meet. The entry criteria must be met on application. The performance criteria are used to judge tutor performance.

Entry criteria

  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • Minimum level of subject expertise: a degree or equivalent in relation to the subject they are going to tutor
  • A sound understanding of, and experience in, initial teacher training in England
  • In-school teaching experience in England
  • A sound understanding of and willingness to use educational and general technologies, e.g. webinar software, Skype, email, virtual learning environments

Performance criteria

All TES Institute tutors are expected to have:

- an understanding of the full role and responsibilities they will be taking on with regards to the trainees assigned to them as students on the relevant TES Institute programme(s)
- sufficient time available to provide regular support to trainees in order to check progress from Day One
- an ability to manage their holidays so that disruption to trainees is minimised
- a commitment to attending online training induction and becoming familiar with materials on the VLE relating to their programme, in preparation for their role
- a commitment to undertaking TES Institute programme induction and training, including update training where appropriate
- a commitment to undertaking CPD, including face-to-face development as required
- a clear understanding at any given time of their trainees’ progress by monitoring regularly and a commitment to providing regular meaningful feedback
- a commitment to completing progress (‘ checkpoint’ and final) reports on time and in the required format
- a commitment to communicating appropriately and in a timely fashion with TES Institute, responding to communications and contacting TES Institute colleagues promptly, particularly where they identify a problem with a trainee which could impact on:

  • TES Institute’s reputation
  • TES Institute’s relationship with a trainee or ITT provider
  • the trainee’s progress or well-being in a significant way
  • the cost of the programme.

- a commitment to being a good ambassador for TES Institute, by being up to date, ‘on-message’ and positive about TES Institute
- an ability to balance responsibility for their trainees with an understanding and appreciation of the limits of their authority and the need to involve TES Institute appropriately
- an awareness of value for money as regards trainee support and TES Institute programmes in general.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young persons. Successful candidates will undergo all appropriate checks.
