Job overview

Salary: Outer London Teachers Main Pay Scale, £29,915 to £41,136 per annum plus SEN allowance, £2,270 per annum

Hours: Full time, all year round

Location: Temporary site at Canterbury Road, Croydon moving to a newly constructed school in New Addington, Surrey

Start Date: September 2021

Addington Valley Academy (AVA) is a co-educational Special School which will have 150 places for children and young people aged 2-19 who have autism and social communication, cognitive, sensory and social, emotional, and behavioural needs in the Croydon region. All our children have Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD). We opened in September 2020 with an initial cohort of 22 ASD year 7 pupils in a temporary site based in Croydon.

Addington Valley Academy are seeking to recruit a PE/Outdoor Education Teacher with Qualified Teacher status to be responsible for the education and welfare of designated classes or groups of pupils with complex needs on the Autistic Spectrum. You will have experience teaching across the age ranges and be familiar with a collaborative approach to planning with other professionals such as Speech and Language and Occupational Therapists. You therefore can demonstrate an ability to modify and adapt the curriculum to support the sensory, physical and emotional well-being of ASD/SLD students.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead curriculum design in a new school with excellent outdoor facilities. We are particularly interested in how outdoor learning can be embedded as part of a daily learning experience for our learning. We are an outward looking school and seeking to develop strong links with a range of external community and charitable organisations.

Experience of working with pupils with SEN is desirable but not essential, what is vital is a determination to transform the lives of our students. This role is likely to develop, as the school grows, into a post carrying a TLR.

This is an exciting time in the school’s development with a planned relocation to a newly constructed school building for the academic year 2021-22 with a fantastic learning environment designed to meet the needs of autistic children.

Addington Valley Academy benefits from being part of Orchard Hill College (the College) and Orchard Hill College Academy Trust (the Trust), a family of specialist education providers for pupils and students from nursery to further education across London, Berkshire, Surrey and Sussex. As an outstanding provider and Academy sponsor, Orchard Hill College has a strong track record for making a positive impact within the local communities it serves.
