Required from September 2019: an enthusiastic, well qualified, Teacher of PE.

We seek a well qualified and  enthusiastic teacher with a commitment to pupils of all ability in a comprehensive secondary school. A willingness to contribute within a team approach to develop the work of the department is essential as is a commitment to participation and leadership of an active extra curricular programme of PE, Sports and activities.

This would be an ideal opportunity for an experienced colleague or someone looking to start their career in a supportive and developmental environment.

The successful candidate would also be expected to join our team of tutors, supporting our pastoral care system.

You would be joining a team of specialist and highly dedicated colleagues, offering support and guidance to new entrants. The school is the lead member for secondary teacher training within the North Devon Teaching School Alliance and as such has an excellent track record of staff development and support.

The department has an enviable reputation within North Devon and beyond for providing excellent curricular and cross curricular opportunities for PE and Sport.  Sport plays an integral role in our pastoral house system, with several house matches and competitions supplementing the busy cross curricular and sporting fixtures calendar. A new Head of department and second in department started in September 2018 and are building on our traditions to enhance PE delivery for all.

PE is a valued subject at Key Stage 3 with each year group receiving  four lessons per fortnight. Additionally, students also receive a lesson per week of Dance in Year 7. As part of our ‘mini-options’ process in Year 9, students can opt to take additional PE and/or Dance to help bridge between KS3 and GCSE options. GCSE PE is a popular subject, currently with six ‘option’ groups within Key Stage 4 and is in addition to our Core PE offer of two lessons per week.

The department is made up of  8 colleagues (7FTE) based in our Sports Centre. The department have access to a sports hall, gymnasium, fitness room, all weather pitch, dedicated netball/tennis courts, dance studio, sports pavilion, and numerous and extensive pitches (football, rugby, rounders, athletics, cricket etc.).

The department has fully planned short and long term schemes of learning with resources available on our Google Drive.  The team are committed to sharing ideas, resources and supporting each other. The department currently offers the AQA GCSE syllabus and is planning to introduce BTEC Sport (activity & fitness) for September 2019.

This is a great opportunity for the right colleague to join a forward thinking and hard working team and to help the school on its journey to deliver excellent teaching, learning and sports provision for all our students.

Barnstaple is a busy town that has a developing industrial base and is the commercial and administrative centre of North Devon. It has been successful in the Britain in Bloom Competition and in recent years has won the Regional, European and International trophies. With the North Devon Link Road, connecting the area with the national motorway system, Barnstaple and its surrounds are planned to grow further in the future.

The North Devon countryside is outstandingly beautiful.  The coast varies from wild cliffs to the magnificent surfing beaches of Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! Exmoor National Park lies just to the north and Dartmoor to the south.  These natural features form the basis of the tourist industry in the area.

The school is very pleasantly situated, overlooking the River Taw, its estuary and the town of Barnstaple with its beautiful views of the surrounding Devon countryside.

The buildings are overall of high quality, linked together and surrounded by twenty-seven acres of playing fields and parkland.

Our substantial building programme has provided a full range of well-equipped modern learning environments.

A community sports hall and floodlit artificial turf pitch is managed by the school to the benefit of both the school and the community. Further sporting facilities have been developed including a new floodlit regional netball centre of six courts.

About The Park Community School

Nestled close to the beautiful North Devon coast and at the edge of Exmoor, The Park Community School is one of two 11-16 comprehensive schools in Barnstaple.  Park was opened in 1972 following the re-organisation of selective education in the town; however, the origins of the school date back to 1910, with the site housing both the Boys and Girls grammar schools.  Many elements of the original buildings remain and these help to link the school to its proud and strong history.

The school currently educates 1472 students, mainly from the town of Barnstaple and outlying villages.  In recent years, the popularity of the school has meant that the geographical catchment has increased, with many students now travelling some distance to join us. Most year groups are currently oversubscribed.

The school is a founding member of The Tarka Learning Partnership (TLP), an academy trust with a vision to empower young people in North Devon through learning. The Trust includes Park’s main feeder primary schools - Eden Park Academy, Sticklepath Community Primary Academy, Landkey Community Primary Academy, Roundswell Community Primary Academy, Newport Community School Primary Academy, Fremington Primary School along with North Molton Primary School. TLP also includes the Devon Primary SCITT, a partner dedicated to primary school teacher training.

TLP supports Park and ensures academic rigour, collaboration and the further development of teaching and learning. Park also has strategic alliances with the North Devon Academic Board, and is a member of South West Institute for Teaching (SWIFT) and the North Devon Teaching School Alliance. This reflects a key focus of our vision and governance to ensure continual school development.
