Job overview

The School:

North London Grammar School (NLGS) is an outstanding school (OFSTED 2018). We are a modern independent grammar school, situated in Hendon, North London, with state-of-the-art facilities. Students benefit from small class sizes and highly interactive learning. The School is a warm and welcoming environment, with a supportive team and an investment in training. This is an exciting time to be joining the School.

The Post:

This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher to teach PE across the School, teaching children aged from 7 to 16.  Experience in teaching children across this age range would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will be an inspirational and forward-thinking teacher who is also able to show empathy and compassion toward children. Our emphasis is very much on inclusion and enjoyment of sport along with participation and skill development, whilst seeking to extend the talents of gifted individuals.

Part of the role will be organising fixtures with local schools, so organisational skills are essential.  The post holder will support the Head of PE in ensuring the delivery of outstanding sporting opportunities within a diverse extra-curriculum programme.

The successful candidate will join us in September 2022. This post is a 0.6 FTE.

There is currently one full-time member of the PE/Games department, supported by part-time sports assistants; external coaches also run extra-curricular sports clubs after school. In addition, our Saturday sports programme began this academic year running football training throughout the Autumn and Spring terms, with Cricket being run during the summer term. Sport is an important part of all pupils’ development and wellbeing and is a department which is growing and developing every year. It is a wonderful activity for developing character, building friendships and staying healthy both physically and mentally. The lessons learned and relationships forged through sport will hold our students in good stead to make meaningful contributions to society.

The department’s cultural framework outlines the character traits we are looking to develop and instil in our students at North London Grammar School. These are transferable to all aspects of their school life, including co-curricular, pastoral, and academic, as well as to life after School.

All students undertake a minimum of two hours of core PE a week with additional Games for KS4. All students also have the opportunity to take part in fixtures and extra-curricular training sessions. Our major Autumn and Spring Term sports are Football and Netball, with Cricket and Athletics in the Summer term. In Physical Education, a range of subjects is covered across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. These include; Gymnastics, Invasion Games, Athletics, Striking and Fielding, Swimming and Table Tennis. We take a multi-model approach to our PE and Games curriculum that is context-driven in PE and focuses on Health & Well-Being, Athlete Development and Leadership Skills.

Values and vision

North London Grammar School’s motto is ‘Bonitas, Scientia, Disciplina’ which is Latin for ‘Goodness, Knowledge, and Instruction’. These are the three pillars on which the school is based and they represent its aspirations for each and every one of its students. The school believes every child has a unique ability and it will help them to make the most of it. At the same time, it wants to teach tolerance, understanding, and respect for every person.

The secondary school aims to give students knowledge of the world around them, but more importantly give them the tools to find knowledge themselves. Logic, rationality, and critical thinking are central to its philosophy. It exists to provide teaching and training so that students can gain knowledge and achieve excellence, and it believes this process includes learning discipline, not just obeying the rules, but also self-discipline: knowing how to conduct yourself, stay focused, and ask questions.
