As part of our journey towards being an ‘Outstanding’ Academy, applications are invited for the post of Technician within the Performing Arts Faculty.

You will join an inspirational team who are dedicated to providing inspiring and engaging lessons and improving the life chances of our students.  This is an exciting opportunity for you through the crucial role you play to make a real difference to the ways in which facilities are used to enhance learning at the Academy.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed member of staff with vision, drive, flexibility and motivation to join us. You will be suitably qualified and experienced to support all academy productions. You will also be involved with advising staff and students on the use of the technical facilities, and coordinating a host of sound and visual resources.

This post provides an excellent opportunity to work alongside hard working and committed staff to make a real difference to the wider life of the academy by providing technical support for events and productions and in so doing contributing both to the student experience and wider community. If you are the type of person who will strive to meet the needs of our staff and students and has a proven record of successful working with staff and young people, then you would cherish this unique opportunity at Northampton Academy.

This role will be based within the creative centre of the academy -  the Music and Drama departments - and have access to and the use of a Mac suite, a 250 seat theatre, 2x drama studio spaces, rehearsal spaces, recording studio, lighting suite and dance studio. Your expertise will not only support the staff within these departments but you will also work alongside and provide support to the students studying the relevant subjects too.

Applicants should have relevant work experience and good technical understanding of sound and lighting equipment along with being able to undertake a range of technical support activities. Experience of audio and video editing and knowledge and application of the use of Macs would also be desirable. The successful candidate must be prepared to work flexibly as occasional unsocial hours may be required due to productions during term-time.

If you are the type of person who strives to meet the needs of every child and has a proven record of successful working with young people, then you would cherish this opportunity.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted in all areas in March 2023. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, TOLERANCE and INTEGRITY. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Quality Mark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

The leadership of the academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons.  To this end, the student behaviour system is clear and simple and easy to administer in lessons. If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf. Teachers at the academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here. In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • A genuine ‘flexi-working’ approach with at least one opportunity a week to come in late or leave early for every teaching member of staff
  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally
