Location: Stafford College

In November 2019 Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) became the first further education provider in England to achieve outstanding grades in every area of Ofsted’s recently reformed Education Inspection Framework (EIF).

The inspection report praised all areas of the College’s provision and acknowledged NSCG’s ‘positive, stimulating and safe learning environment’, ‘highly motivated staff’, and ‘learners’ exemplary behaviour and attitudes to learning’. It also highlighted the fantastic partnerships the College has with industry. To read the full Ofsted report for Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group, please visit the Ofsted Government website.

The group is currently home to a population of over 5,000 full-time students and around 500 students on higher education programmes. We have over 4,000 part-time or adult learners and 2,000 apprentices where we work with over 800 individual employers.

Based in our Engineering & Construction area, the Personal Tutor will support students and measure the impact of tutorials, through identification of student strengths, aspirations and needs. You will agree and monitor targets to facilitate progress in both academic and personal goals, relative to their starting point.  In addition to those with existing tutoring experience, this position would also suit someone currently working in a Teaching Assistant role and/or industry professionals who are considering a career in teaching.

You will deliver a variety of group tutorials that will support the students with their personal development and wellbeing. It is this holistic and varied support that will be crucial to improving students’ confidence in their next steps.

The College considers its tutorial system to be a vital element in the support, engagement and retention of students. As a Personal Tutor you will be a central contact for the student and will actively promote pastoral support from enrolment and right through to the end of the ‘student journey’. Along with the curriculum team, you will enable a supportive transition and induction process through contact with student and parents. This will be facilitated by your use of the College monitoring system.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To make contact with parents/guardians/carers of tutees throughout the course, to introduce your role, discuss progress, issues and attendance etc.
  • To effectively utilise the College monitoring system to implement appropriate support and take action at an early stage.
  • To provide support to students with personal, domestic or social difficulties and where appropriate to signpost them to additional support within or outside the College.
  • To promote effective achievement and retention through the target setting and review process using their ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and through effective 1:1s.
  • To conduct effective tutorial activities.
  • To promote acceptable learner behaviour, attendance, punctuality and progress.
  • To liaise with Curriculum and Support Staff and inform the appropriate manager where a learner’s place may be at risk and to ensure appropriate support is in place.
  • To prepare references on learners for potential employers, higher education establishments and other bodies.
  • To support students in the application process to university and in particular the drafting of UCAS personal statements.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience of working in a tutor capacity role or equivalent (Desirable).
  • Holds English & Maths GCSE or equivalent.
  • Is able to develop a good rapport with 16 – 19 year old learners both in a group situation and on a one to one basis.
  • Experience of working with Higher Education / UCAS application processes (Desirable)

Stafford College is a further education, non-denominational establishment for pupils over the age of 16. It is situated in Stafford Town Centre, on Earl Street. Approximately 3,231 students are enrolled at the college at present. 1,877 are in full-time education aged between 16 and 19 and another 680 are mature students studying part-time. Students are able to get their A-levels at the college, as well as a range of other qualifications.

Values and Vision

Stafford College aims to provide an excellent education for all students. They should behave in a respectful manner towards every person they come across. Pupils get an understanding at the college of what it will be like to work in the real world. Students are pushed to be tolerant of other religions in the local community. The college believes every pupil should work hard and push for diversity. The successes of the students are celebrated by everyone in the college.

Ofsted report

“The findings from self-assessment are broadly accurate; staff and managers have a good understanding of what the college needs to improve. Students develop good practical skills in a range of trades as a result of good practical teaching in college, supplemented by good on-the-job coaching in the workplace for apprentices. All students receive good support. Recent changes to supporting study programme students, including their access to personal tutors, progress coaches and learning mentors, are enabling managers to identify and support students at risk and support students’ progress. This is helping to rectify the variability in the quality of student profiles. Students understand and value the different kinds of support available to them.”
