Job overview

King’s College London Mathematics School (KCLMS) is for highly motivated students aged 16-19 with a particular aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. We are seeking to appoint a Physic Technician to work closely with the physics department to manage the first-rate technical resources owned by King's Maths School.

The physics department consists of two labs and four teachers. All students at the school take Physics A Level, and practical demonstrations and experiments are considered by the department to be essential to the development of student understanding.

The labs are modern and are serviced by a spacious prep room with direct access to the labs and other storage areas. Most of our apparatus was purchased for the opening of the school in 2014, with some replenished more recently. A Design Lab has a variety of common workshop tools that facilitate construction of basic apparatus, and also features a laser cutter and 3D printer. The post features the opportunity to lead workshops in this lab and to be involved with or indeed lead clubs using these facilities such as the Engineering Club.

The ideal appointee will be able to work independently and flexibly in fulfilling the practical requisitions of teaching staff. They will enjoy the challenge of supporting A Level practical work, and will bring their own ideas into the preparation of materials.

The practical requirements during the first two school terms are demanding. During summer term, there are few practical lessons. However, the appointee will be expected to undertake other tasks depending on experience, in particular support for administrative staff with preparation of resources and examination work.

Physics lessons are spread across the week, so the ideal candidate will be able to spread their hours across several days. Days and hours are negotiable on appointment.

For the right candidate, there is also the opportunity to be involved with the teaching of Physics, through intervention or small group classes. We will consider applicants for this additional responsibility should they note this on their application statement. Such candidates should expect to have a very strong academic background in Physics or a related subject.

The post will commence from 1 September 2021.
