Job overview

The Latymer School is a selective, co-educational grammar school in North London with an outstanding musical tradition and excellent facilities.  We are seeking from April 2021 an experienced and inspirational piano accompanist and piano teacher to join our large team of visiting music teachers.  Although this vacancy relates primarily to piano accompaniment, there will also be some piano teaching for the successful applicant, with the potential for this to develop over time.

The current hourly rates for piano accompaniment and instrumental teaching are £41.81 and £38.01 respectively, subject to review in the summer term.  

The successful applicant will be an outstanding pianist who enjoys working with young people and who has considerable experience of accompanying and teaching teenage musicians in a range of contexts. They will be able to work constructively and supportively with our students – from Grade 1 to diploma standard - and help them to do their very best in performances. Their sight-reading skills will be excellent and their knowledge of repertoire extensive.

About 400 instrumental and singing lessons take place every week in school; the vast majority of those have continued online during lockdown.  ABRSM examinations – usually sessions in January, May and July – take place in the Great Hall or in the Music Department, with well over 100 candidates per year.  Aside from assisting with ABRSM examination accompaniment, the successful applicant would be expected to accompany many of our A level and GCSE Music students in their coursework performances, accompany for our Chamber Concerts and our externally adjudicated annual Instrumental and Vocal Performance Competition.  The majority of our A level Music students are post-Grade 8 performers and our GCSE Music classes also see very high levels of practical music-making.  

The Music Department houses Yamaha grand pianos in the two main classrooms and there are well-maintained upright pianos in our suite of practice rooms.  Elsewhere in the school there are good quality grand pianos in our Great Hall, Small Hall and Seward Studio.  These venues are used for performance events, including large-scale Music at Latymer and Orchestral Concerts, Chamber Concerts, A level Recitals and our Competition, as well as a ‘Pop, Jazz and All That’ evening and major productions in collaboration with the Drama Department.  Many of our concerts are on Thursdays (after school or evening) and it will be important that the successful applicant has good availability.  Our usual calendar does not include any weekend music events.

In summary, a typical Latymer year involves the following occasions requiring piano accompaniment.  We would expect the successful applicant to be available and sufficiently flexible for the majority of these (including relevant rehearsals) and to liaise with colleagues as appropriate:

• Three ABRSM examination sessions (total six days), shared with colleagues

• Various GCSE and A level performances – typically two per student per year

• Chamber Concerts – five or six per year

• Instrumental and Vocal Performance Competition – accompanying the Open (Grade 7+) category in the preliminary round and finals

The Latymer School is based in Enfield, London. It is a selective, voluntary aided, grammar school. The secondary school is a coeducational establishment that teaches children from the age of 11 and 18. At the moment, there are around 1,118 students on the roll. This includes the 455 pupils in sixth form. The school was founded in 1624.

In 2021, following work with students arising from the Black Lives Matter and Everyone’s Invited movements, we appointed an Equalities Officer, audited our community and produced the Latymer Equalities Action Plan (LEAP). The LEAP project focusses on the characteristics protected by the Equalities Act (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation) but may also reveal other issues outside of this remit.

In order to truly be inclusive and celebrate diversity, the Latymer School and its members will commit to these principles going forward:

The Senior Leadership Team works with a number of key, student-led groups in the school to promote equality, including the Anti-Racist Committee, the LGBTQ+ group and the Feminist Society. Amongst other activities within the Latymer community, these groups run themed assemblies, such as Black History Month and Holocaust Memorial Day.
