Job overview
Leicester Grammar School is looking to appoint one or more self-employed piano teachers from September 2018.
The School envisages that more than one teacher will be needed in order to meet current demand for piano lessons and to allow for growth in this fundamental aspect of the School’s musical life. Our outgoing piano teacher, Marguerite Beatson currently teaches for five days per week.
Visiting Music Teachers at Leicester Grammar are self-employed and as such bill parents directly for lessons. Charges to parents are agreed annually by the Instrumental Teachers in discussion with the School and are currently £38 per hour. Whilst the number of pupils receiving piano lessons has remained consistently high over many years, the School cannot guarantee a certain number of face to face hours with students.
The Music Department will be entering a new phase in its development following the retirement of Dr David Whittle after 32 years as Director of Music. This appointment is seen as key to the underpinning of the musical literacy, development and high aspirations of our young musicians. Successful applicants for the role will be committed teachers and will be keen to be involved, where appropriate, in accompanying students in instrumental exams and concerts. Familiarity with jazz and Rockschool repertoire would be welcomed as a means of broadening students’ musicianship alongside their classical training. There may also be the opportunity to be involved in chamber music coaching and to arrange performance opportunities within the School. Furthermore, LGS is keen for music to be one of its main means of outreach and a demonstrable willingness to explore how this area might be developed would be an advantage.
In the main, piano teachers will coordinate among themselves which pupils are allocated to each teacher, if necessary consulting with the incoming Director of Music, John Barker.
If you are interested in joining us at the School, please email a copy of your CV and a covering letter to John Barker, barkerj@leicestergrammar.org.uk
- Closing date for applications is midday on Monday 5 March
- Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 12 March
Leicester Grammar School is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children. The appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Agency check.
