Job overview

The School

Twickenham Preparatory School (TPS) is an independent, coeducational, day school for children aged 4 - 13, situated in South West London. TPS has a reputation for being nurturing and pastorally strong with high academic standards and a broad curriculum.

The Department

In the French department at TPS, we aim to create a warm, safe and welcoming environment in which the children feel completely confident and uninhibited, and to which they feel happy to return each lesson.  We strive to provide fun and relaxed, yet inspiring and challenging lessons, in which all our pupils can develop a love of language learning and fulfil their potential.

We want to encourage interest in, and develop positive attitudes to, the use French and other languages and towards speakers of other languages; as we explore differences and similarities between language and culture, we aim to promote tolerance, excitement and celebration of diversity.

Our children learn French from Reception to Y8 and we seek to develop the skills that will enable them to understand and use, first the spoken word and, as they advance, the written word, so that they can use the language effectively for the purposes of practical communication.  Beginning with songs, games, rhymes and stories for our youngest pupils, we gradually develop their linguistic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, enabling each pupil to fulfil his/her potential in the subject and gain the highest possible mark at ISEB Common Entrance or Scholarship level if appropriate.

We are keen to ensure that children see that languages are for life and not just for the classroom, and we offer them lots of enrichment opportunities beyond weekly lessons.  Whether it is participating in a pre-prep French picnic, singing a French song in the Nativity play, serving Mothers' Day breakfast dressed as French waiters, taking part in various local and national language learning competitions, attending language taster days at senior schools, playing Pétanque in an after school club, or going on the wonderfully exciting French trip at the end of Y6, we hope that the chance to use their French outside the classroom stimulates and inspires our children still further.

The Position

The position is available on a part-time basis (0.2) full time equivalent.

A dynamic and inspiring French teacher is required from September 2021 to deliver French to our Pre-Prep pupils. Working within a talented and supportive team the successful candidate will have the ability to inspire our younger pupils with the love of French and capture their interest and imagination in a stimulating, enjoyable and effective way.

You will be a self-motivated, innovative and outward looking teacher with a desire to create exciting lessons to deliver the French curriculum, whilst playing a role in departmental improvement projects.
