Job overview

Applications are welcome from teachers with either mainstream primary or special school primary experience, including NQT’s:

  • Are you an outstanding primary practitioner who is creative and makes learning fun?
  • Do you have high expectations of pupils with Special Educational Needs?
  • Are you willing to go that 'extra mile' to really inspire and enrich our pupils learning, so that they are highly motivated and can successfully achieve?

If you can answer 'YES' to all of the above, then we would like to receive an application from you!

St. Giles is the only primary special school in Derby City. We meet the needs of pupils aged 4-11 years with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This includes those with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and those with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Pupils may also have other associated needs.

We are a warm, inclusive and outstanding school (Ofsted December 2016) that continues to develop and improve our practice, so that we can provide a ‘World Class’ provision! We are an ‘outward facing’ school with high aspirations of becoming a Teaching School in the future. As a strategic partner of Derby Early Years Teaching School Alliance (DEYTSA), we play a very active role in working with and supporting other schools in the local and wider area. There is an expectation that all staff will contribute to the developments of our school and that of other schools too. Please visit our school website to find out more about us: www.stgiles.derby.sch.uk

Governors and Senior Leaders are looking to appoint a Class Teacher to start September 2018, initially on a fixed-term one-year contract to cover maternity leave. The post would suit a mainstream primary school teacher who is looking to develop their SEND knowledge and skills, or a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) who would like to complete their induction year within an outstanding special school. The exact key stage/specialist area/phase in the school where the successful candidate will be required to teach, will be determined based upon prior knowledge, skills and experience. All new staff will receive a thorough induction programme and NQT’s will be allocated an experienced mentor from the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), plus dedicated NQT time.

St. Giles School is very proud of its achievements to date:

  • Ofsted Outstanding in all areas
  • Makaton Friendly School
  • Arts Mark Silver Award
  • Inclusion Quality Mark ‘Centre of Excellence’ Award
  • SSAT approved centre to deliver National Leadership Programmes (NPQML)
  • ‘The Best You Can Be’ Derbyshire Music Partnership Award
  • ‘Be Mighty, Be Creative!’ Award
  • I-Can Communication Trust Specialist Status Award
  • Speakers School Council Award

Due to the specialist education that we offer, applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the school before applying. Please telephone the school office on 01332 343039 to book on one of the following tours (NB: we are unable to arrange visits outside of these times):

  • Wed 14th Feb at 9.30am
  • Fri 16th Feb at 2pm
  • Tue 27th Feb at 4.00pm
  • Fri 2nd March at 9.30am
  • Mon 5th March at 4.00pm
  • Thu 8th March at 2.00pm

All completed application forms with covering letters (no more than 2 sides of A4) should be e-mailed to our School Business Manager Sofia Orme at the following address: sorme@stgiles.derby.sch.uk

Closing date: 9am Wed 14th March 2018
Interviews: Tue 20th March 2018 (full day)

St. Giles School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The post will require an enhanced DBS and references will be requested prior to interview.
