Job overview

Primary EAL and Additional/Learning Support Teacher

The Sultan’s School is looking to appoint an experienced Primary English/EAL Teacher for August 2023.

Please contact Penny Kontopyrghou Senior Business Director 07595 968 600 when you apply to discuss your application or if you have any questions- email penny.kontopyrghou@hays.com

Penny has visited the school and met with the leadership team on many occasions and placed many teachers here over the years.

Please note that to qualify for a position at The Sultan’s School you must hold a recognised teaching qualification (B.Ed., PGCE, QTS, GTP or national equivalent) in addition to qualifications such as CELTA or TESOL.

The position of Primary EAL Teacher at The Sultan’s School is unique in that you will be working with two different, but equally important, groups.

Part of your responsibility will be to work with those mainstream students who are finding the acquisition of English a little difficult. This is done through working with students in small, age-appropriate groups.

The second part of your role will be to work with the students who join our scholarship programme in Year 6 (the final year of Primary school). The scholarship programme was established by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, forty years ago, and offers boys from the interior of Oman the chance to attend the school, through our Boarding programme. The boys join the school in Year 6 and stay until they graduate from the IBDP programme in Year 13. Many of our graduate scholars now hold prominent positions within Oman society.

The Sultan’s School was established in 1977 under the sponsorship of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and offers a bilingual international programme from KG through to Year 13. In Primary (KG to Year 6) and Middle School (Years 7 to 9) we offer the Cambridge International Programmes. In Years 10 and 11 we offer the Cambridge IGCSE and in Years 12 and 13 our students follow the IBDP.

Over the last six years, our IB results have been outstanding with an average pass rate of 96%. The vast majority of our graduates go to university outside of Oman, many on government scholarships.

The Sultan’s School has one of the largest school campuses in the world and is blessed with outstanding facilities. Over the last five years, the school has invested heavily in a campus modernisation and expansion programme that includes additional housing for staff, a new boarding house, a 400m tartan running track, an additional cafeteria, and the expansion of a number of classrooms. Our next project is the continued development of our STEAM centre and the refurbishment and expansion of the performing arts area.

Oman is a stunningly beautiful and peaceful country, and our internationally recruited staff stay an average of 7.5 years.

Please send a CV (max 2 pages) and a supporting letter explaining why you are suitable (max 2 pages), as a SINGLE

PDF document to the Principal (Dr. Glenn Canterford) at ss.education@hays.com
